Tachyus (comics)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tachyus [IPA: /tæ.ki.ʌs/] (William “Will” Feynman Stenton III) is a fictional superhero/vigilante from the Helix Comics Universe, specifically, the Hedron comic series. Tachyus was created by science fiction writer E.C. Connelly (who founded and owns Helix Comics’ parent company, Helix, Inc.[1]). Hedron was penciled and inked by veteran comic artist Scott Rosema. Tachyus’ first appearance was in Helix Comic’s first issue, Hedron, Volume 1Issue #1 (August 2009) and his last appearance has yet to be shown.[2]

Will had dated fellow Hedron Krystal “Spectre” Jem, until Issue #9, Volume 2.[3] In Issue #24, Volume 2, the Hedron Team initiated a new member: a human mutant named Laurie Danielle “Mesmer” Mason[3], with whom Stenton entered into a relationship soon following Mason’s acceptance into the Team.[2]

The character of Tachyus is loosely based on Hedron creator E.C. Connelly.[4] Stenton was given his middle name as an homage to the physicist Richard P. Feynman.[3]

Character biography

William Feynman Stenton III was born to two wealthy physicists named Angela Stenton (née Rideaux) and William Feynman Stenton, Jr. Will’s father was a particle physicist (specializing on String theory) and a mechanical engineer and his mother, an astrophysicist.

When Will was 17, his father, who was working on a machine that could separate the two halves of realitytime and matter and energy—at the time, vanished mysteriously from his lab while testing his invention on a rabbit (since it had a relatively low mass). I.N.T.E.L.—for whom the machine was being built—created a cover story for the incident, citing it as an “unforeseeable complication of the Tachyon Project.”

Becoming Tachyus

About a year later, shortly after Will’s 18th birthday, while his mother (called Angela Rideaux again) and his younger sister, Lucy Rideaux-Stenton, were on a vacation in Bermuda, Will woke up one morning to find that several I.N.T.E.L. Agents were invading his house. Will hid in his father’s lab in the basement in order to avoid any confrontation with the Agents.

William F. Stenton, Jr.’s lab was shut down by I.N.T.E.L. for being “temporally unstable” following his disappearance. The Agents searched the entire house before coming down to the basement. There, they found Will Stenton III hiding in the quantum fission chamber of his father’s unfinished Wormhole Flux Generator Unit prototype; the Agents attempted to apprehend Will and bring him back to I.N.T.E.L. Headquarters to question him about the location of the original plans to the Generator, but Will, in a claustrophobic frenzy, accidentally activated the Generator, causing a huge rift in the space-time continuum.

Will tried to escape the wormhole, but ended up being drawn into it and “dumped out” in the year 2008 A.D.—and with superhuman time-traveling and time-manipulation abilities. Unfortunately, the Agents found the original plans for the Generator and used them to create their own, advanced version of it back at I.N.T.E.L. HQ in the year 2020.

Powers and abilities

Tachyus has the ability to create a “quantum singularity” large enough for a person to pass through; these singularities can either transport the person or object through space or through time (although the latter takes quite a bit more of Tachyus’ physical energy).

Tachyus can also rapidly age or rapidly make “younger” a person or object. For example:

  • In Hedron, Volume 1Issue #5, Stenton, while trying to control his abilities, makes a stainless steel spoon spontaneously rust, just by concentrating on it.
  • In Hedron 2020, Issue #33, Stenton (then long since having adopted the persona of “Tachyus”), in a battle with his former girlfriend, Laurie Mason, snuck up behind her and, just by putting his hand on her shoulder, turned her into an infant in relative seconds, therefore rendering her helpless (and powerless). I.N.T.E.L., with much difficulty, corrected this transformation by suspending Mason in a time dilation field back at I.N.T.E.L. HQ, slowly aging her back up to 18 years, temporally re-fusing the newborn- and “infantized-”versions of Laurie Mason (called “Mesmer” by that time). This process only bought the Hedron Team about eight months' time, until they would meet Mesmer again.
