Phonetic changes

  • Addition of a voiced labiodental fricative before ą
    ąglь > glь > giel
  • Softening of consonants before front vowels: i, ь, e, ę, ě
    > siĄ > się
    lъjь > biały
  • ablaut of vowels before hard coronal consonants: e > o, ě > a
    nesą > niosę but nesešь > niesiesz
    bělъjь > biy but bělitъ > (on) bieli
    • slyšatь – slyšalъ – slyšalь > słyszeć, słyszał, słyszeli (compare Russian слышать )
      wisětь – wisělъ – wisělь > wisieć, wisiał, wisieli
  • Disappearance of weak yers while strong yers became e
    pьsъ > pies ale pьsa > psa
    sъnъ > sen
