Reese Towpower Trailer light converter for a 2002 Hyundai Elantra

Trailer light converter is the name of an electrical component used for the wiring of a trailer onto the towing vehicle. It is usually necessary because of differences in the wiring of the two vehicles, such as a difference in voltage or the number of wires.

Wiring

Some Trailer light converter's (TLCs) follow an electrical wiring colour scheme.[1][2] For example, the patented TLC Towpower, manufactured by Reese, utilizes the following colour patern.[2]

Electrical Wiring Colour Scheme
  • Green - Right turn
  • Red - Brake
  • Yellow - Left turn
  • Brown - Tail light
  • White - Ground (Vehicle Structure)

The other end of this device uses a 4-Way flat wire connection.[1]
