Fitzsimmons (also spelled FitzSimons, Fitzsimons or FitzSimmons) is an English and Irish surname of Norman origin.

The origin of the surname appears to be via Norman immigration, through England and on to Ireland, and the surname was first recorded in Ireland in 1177 with the famous John de Courcy linked to Carrickfergus Castle.

At one time the surname was very popular in County Down.

Those with the surname that originated from the Norfolk, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire area of Britain were thought to be Scandinavian and of the genere Danus, as the area was settled by Danish Vikings and predate the Norman invasion in 1066 AD.

'Norman' was a term applied to those Vikings who conquered parts of Northern France beginning in 911 A.D. Their progeny invaded England in 1066 and arrived in Ireland in 1169 landing at Bannow Bay, Co. Wexford. The Online Dictionary defined Cambro-Briton as "a Welshman

Interestingly "Dermot MacMurrough enlisted the assistance of Richard fitz Gilbert de Clare, would-be earl of Pembroke (Wales), and a group of Cambro-Norman barons including the half-brothers Maurice FitzGerald and Robert FitzStephen, both sons of the Welsh princess Nesta." Merlin and King Arthur are also mentioned
