He had attended the original audition, having met the No. 73 producers when his band Marseille appeared on Southern Television's Saturday Banana. He didn't become a regular until the third series of No. 73 shown in 1983. After production ceased on 7T3 in 1988 he went on to present Motormouth, another Saturday Morning kids show made by Television South. Buchanan stayed with Motormouth until the show's cancellation in 1992. In 1989 he began presenting the popular CITV show Art Attack, which he has presented since the very first series began. In 1991 he hosted the British version of Finders Keepers, a room raiding game show for both Television South & Scottish Television when Television South lost their licence to broadcast. Neil co-hosted the show with Diane Youdale, the former Gladiators star, in its final series in 1996. Death?

In 2008 rumours of Buchanan's death spread around the internet via various forums and social networking sites. ITV issued a press release at the time to quash the rumours, and when the story again featured on The Chris Moyles Show on BBC Radio 1 on 19 August, Buchanan himself was contacted by telephone to prove the rumours were not true.[2]
