Born into an ecclesiastical family[3] on 8 October 1909 he was educated at Marlborough College and St John's College, Cambridge [4]. Ordained at Southwark Cathedral in 1932 after a Curacy at St Peter’s Walworth[5] he was for many years a Naval Chaplain [6]. Following this he served the Church in Rondebosch, was then Vicar of Lyme Regis and finally (before his elevation to the Episcopate) Archdeacon of the Isle of Wight. He retired to Dorset in 1976[7] and died on 14 January 1987.
