L.A. Noire is an upcoming video game in development by Team Bondi and to be published by Rockstar Games for PlayStation 3 L.A. Noire is set in "a perfectly re-created Los Angeles" of the late 1940s, with players being given an open-ended challenge to solve a series of murders. The postwar setting will include the noir necessity of corruption, as well as drugs and jazz themes. The game uses a distinctive noire colouring-style to strengthen the feeling from detective movies of the '40s.

Though little information has been disclosed so far about L.A. Noire, Rockstar has given a little impression of the game in the first trailer.[1] A more recent trailer from September 2008 could indicate that James Ellroy's alternative L.A. universe is a direct inspiration for the game. The final sequence of the trailer ends with a cop introducing himself as "Detective Meeks", a minor but significant character in Ellroy's L.A. Quartet[2]. The "Noire" part of the name is a reference to the film noir genre, a style of black-and-white movie which was most popular from the 1940s to the 1950s.

L.A. Noire is also notable for using Lightsprint's real-time global illumination technology. Team Bondi has announced that the game was in its final phase. The game would be finished soon. [3]

Platform

In February, 2004 Brendan McNamara, Team Bondi's president, responded to an interview with Kristen Reed that "the project is wholly funded by Sony Computer Entertainment America. We have a long-term exclusive arrangement with SCEA."[4]

On June 11, 2007, Take-Two Interactive, the sole publisher of Rockstar Games, re-confirmed the release of the PlayStation 3 version by listing it amongst its "announced to date" titles for "fiscal 2008" in a press release regarding the company's second quarter financial results.[5] However, during the shareholders conference-call, a spokesperson for Take Two inferred that both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 releases are likely and that "LA Noire is being developed for next-generation systems."[6] However L.A. Noire has only been officially announced for the Playstation 3.

On September 10 2007, as part of their Q3 2007 financial disclosure, Take Two announced the game was delayed until their 2009 fiscal year.[7]

On the Rockstar Games official web site, L.A. Noire has a release date that is "to be announced", regions that are "to be announced", and a platform that is "to be announced". This leads to more uncertainty on when it will come out, where it will come out, and if it is still a PS3 exclusive title.[8]
