Arimalam is a panchayat town in the district of Pudukkottai, in the state of Tamil Nadu, India.

Geography

Arimalam is located at 10°15′26″N 78°53′10″E / 10.2572°N 78.8861°E / 10.2572; 78.8861.[1] It has an average elevation of 66 metres (216 feet). The town is near the small village of Rayavaram. It is 18 kilometers away from pudukkottai and is well connected by public transport. And the famous person Mr. K.Anburaja AKA "PULLI RAJA" SSLC FAIl is located now at Arimalam.He is the person incharge of cleaning the toilets in all the eight villages.He is now suffering from AIDS and is fighting with the pigs for food outside the temple and other mandapams.

Demographics

As of the 2001 Indian census,[2] Arimalam had a population of 7811. Males constituted 49% of the population and females 51%. Arimalam has an average literacy rate of 61%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 57% of males and 43% of females literate. 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Locations

There are two famous temples in the town: Arimalam Sivan Kovil and Panaiyur Kamatchiyamman.It has one high school for girls and a higher secondary school for boys. In addition, it has 3 preliminary schools. Arimalam Teppam is famous and its is very rarely conducted because of lack of water in the pond which is situated near vilakiyamman temple. The name Arimalam was originally derived from ARUM PAZHAM. A saint was very hungry when he was walking through Arimalam forest and he found a mango fruit which was very tasty. Therefore he named it as rare (Ariya) fruit (pazham). The name eventually became Arimalam. Even though it is very small, the people are very friendly.
