Please assume good faith; and please don't edit widely-used templates without getting consensus first.

Re this situation at template {{Controversial}}: Please assume good faith, at least in situations such as this where most other editors would, I think, see no evidence of bad faith; at least, I see none.

If you wish to edit a template such as Controversial, which is transcluded in over 1500 talk pages, please follow these steps:

  • Post a message on the template talk page describing and quoting exactly the changes you propose;
  • In the case of template Controversial, also post a messages on the talk pages of any articles you're involved in editing which have that template on their talk page. In these messages, state that you're proposing a change to the template and give a link to the section of the template talk page where discussion is to occur;
  • Wait at least 1 day for comments (perhaps longer);
  • Do the edit only if no one expressed opposition or the situation is such that it's clear that a typical uninvolved admin would recognize that there is rough consensus for the change. If in doubt as to whether there is consensus, consult an uninvolved admin.

Please follow the "...but be careful" instruction in WP:BOLD. Please follow steps such as the above whenever making any edit anywhere on Wikipedia that is on a frequently-viewed or widely-used page, or that it can reasonably be predicted is likely to be opposed by some editors.

The above requests are no more than what I believe the typical experienced Wikipedian normally does. Coppertwig (talk) 18:40, 17 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
