Sarah Geronimo, born as Sarah Asher Tua Geronimo on July 25, 1988, is a Filipino singer and actress.[1]
She entered the music industry at the age of 14, when she won a reality singing contest on IBC Channel 13, entitled "Star for a Night"(2003). After winning, she signed a recording contract with VIVA Records, as part of the prize she won.[2] Then on September 2003, she released her debut album, "Popstar: A Dream Come True", that reached 7x platinum. She also staged her first major solo concert at the Music Museum in the same year. In 2004, she signed a contract with ABS-CBN, and starred on television programs, such as: "Sarah, The Teen Princess" and became a mainstay until now in ASAP[3]. She also released her new album, "Sweet Sixteen" and together with other singers, they staged a concert in Araneta Coliseum, and was also brought abroad.[4]
In 2005, Sarah appeared on more television shows, performed on concert tours and sang theme songs for movies. Then in the same year she staged another major solo concert in Araneta Coliseum, entitled "The Other Side".[5] And in 2006, she casted as the lead actress of a drama series, "Bituing Walang Ningning".[6] She also relased her third album, Becoming, and had concert tours outside the country.
She hosted a reality singing contest for children in 2007, the "Little Big Superstar"[7] and took another lead role on a soap opera, "Pangarap na Bituin".[8] In the same year, she staged another major solo concert in Araneta Coliseum, entitled "Sarah Geronimo in Motion" and went again abroad to have concert tours.[9] Then after the event, she released her fourth album, "Taking Flight" that reached platinum.[10] She also stayed in L.A.(US), to record with Howie Dorough of Backstreet Boys for a duet on her 5th album.[11]
Sarah Geronimo had closed endorsement contracts with some of the brands in the country, some of these were Jollibee, HerBench, Hapee, Belo, Extreme Magic Sing and Cebuana Lhuillier.[12] Furthermore, she also endorsed a campaign for a running senator, Edgardo Angara.[13]
Sarah Geronimo has received several awards, most were appreciation for her being a good example to the Filipino youth, this includes an Anak TV Seal Award[14], People of the Year of People Asia Magazine[15], Asian Magazine People of the Year[16], some were from the government and others were from respected institutions. As a singer, she won several recording awards from the most prominent award-giving bodies in the country. Recently, she was the biggest winner in the MYX Music Awards 2008, as she bagged four awards including, Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Female Artist of the Year and Favorite Myx Celebrity VJ.[17]
Recently, VIVA Records confirmed that Sarah Geronimo's The Other Side and In Motion Concert DVD sold a platinum status each, making her the very first artist to receive a platinum record not only for one but for two of her DVD copies of a concert.[18]
At present, after a valentines concert in Araneta Coliseum with other singing stars and concert tours abroad[19] and a 180 million-peso grossing movie, A Very Special Love[20], she is currently promoting her 5th album entitled, Just Me[21] and she is about to stage another solo concert at the Araneta Coliseum this Novemeber 2008, entitled, The Next One.[22] And come next year her follow-up movie with John Lloyd Cruz will be released as Star Cinema's first offering.[23]
Biography
"When I was younger, I really wanted to act. But now that I am given the opportunity to achieve my dream of being an actress, I found out that it was not that easy at all. I learn to appreciate my work most especially the things I've done as a singer."
Sarah Asher Geronimo was born on July 25, 1988 to Father Delfin Geronimo, a retired PLDT employee, and mother Divina, who used to run a beauty parlor in their house at Sta. Cruz, Manila. Sarah is the third of four children with siblings Johna Rizzie, Sunshine Grace, and Ezekiel Gabriel.
Sarah's first music lessons came from her father. He would have her practice everyday to develop her singing prowess. Sarah first sang on stage at age two at a mall show. Sarah sang "Pasko Na Naman" with Pinky Marquez and Richard Reynoso. At four years old, mother Divine would accompany her to auditions for different TV programs. Sarah became part of kiddie shows Pen-pen de Sarapen (4-6 years old), Ang TV (7-8 years old), and NEXT (8-9 years old). In between auditions, Sarah would perform at shopping malls and hotel lounges. She was one of the performers during the 1995 visit of Pope John Paul II. Sarah at an early age joined hosts of different singing contests the first of which was Tuklas Talino sponsored by the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT).
Star For A Night hosted by Ms. Regine Velasquez was the singing contest where she joined and on March 1, 2003, at age fourteen, Sarah emerged as the grand prize winner of the said singing competition with her rendition of the song "To Love You More." She won P 1 million and a managerial contract at Viva Artist Agency. The prize money was spent on tuition fees and the operation of her eldest sister.[24]
Career
At fourteen years old, Sarah bested 10 other finalists in the nationwide search for Star For a Night (Philippine Edition) aired over IBC Channel 13. Her performance of Celine Dion's To Love You More won her the Grand Prize, winning 1 Million Pesos and a recording contract with Viva Records.[25]
In September 2003, Geronimo released her debut album entitled "Popstar: A Dream Come True". The album was awarded 7x platinum, selling more than 350,000 copies. She also staged her first solo concert at the Music Museum in the same year. The album produced singles such as "Forever's Not Enough", "To Love You More" as well as "Sa Iyo".[26]
Aside from singing, Geronimo also acted in supporting roles for films like, Filipinas, Captain Barbell, and Annie B.. After winning in Star for a Night, she appeared in GMA Network shows until she finally landed a contract in ABS-CBN that became her home studio until now.[27]
2004: Sweet Sixteen
In 2004, Geronimo signed a contract with ABS-CBN, where she had her first project in acting through starring in a drama series entitled Sarah, The Teen Princess.[28] She also became a mainstay until now, in a musical variety show, ASAP.[29]
She also obtained endorsement contracts such as, Jollibee[30], Charmee[31].
In November 2004, Geronimo released her second album entitled Sweet Sixteen. The album has since reached 3x Platinum status, selling more than 150,000 copies. "How Could You Say You Love Me" was released as the first single from the album.[32]
Sarah, along with other reality star search winners Rachelle Ann Go, and Erik Santos staged the Night of the Champions concert at the Araneta Coliseum, which also went on a tour in US.[33]
She also played in the fantasy movie, Lastikman of VIVA Films.[34]
2005: The Other Side
In 2005, Geronimo sang the theme of a Star Cinema movie, Can This Be Love.[35]
She also became part of the fourth season of the weekly teen-oriented program, SCQ Reload, Kilig Ako.[36]
In summer of 2005, Sarah reunited with her fellow champions for a US Tour of Pinoy Idols: Return Of The Champions, which was staged in selected cities in the U.S. for a two-month period.[37]
Sarah went on to perform in her first major solo concert, "The Other Side" at the Araneta Coliseum.[38] Viva Records released a live DVD album of the filmed tour in Araneta Coliseum named as "The Other Side: Live Album", and achieved platinum.[39]
2006: Becoming
This year, she lead the cast of one of ABS-CBN's primetime soap opera, Bituing Walang Ningning. Here, she starred as an aspiring singer named, Dorina Pineda[40]. She also released a soundtrack of the series.[41]
Her third studio album entitled "Becoming" was released in August 2006, and reached Platinum. The album yielded three singles: "I Still Believe In Loving You", "Carry My Love" and "Iingatan Ko Ang Pag-ibig Mo".[42]
Geronimo continued to perform globally as she staged concerts in Taiwan, Canada, Alaska, and Dubai. She also held a The Other Side US Tour" in San Diego, Hanford, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Honolulu, Maui, Washington DC and Atlantic City.[43]
While in the United States in November 18, 2006, she was chosen by Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao to sing the Philippine National Anthem Lupang Hinirang on his fight against Mexico's Erik "El Terrible" Morales at the UNLV Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.[44]
2007: Taking Flight
In 2007, Geronimo toured major cities in the US, Australia, Canada, Europe and UAE. She is still a mainstay of ASAP '07, and also hosts Little Big Superstar[45], a reality singing contest for aspiring child performers that has recently concluded its third season. Geronimo released a new single "Reach For The Sky" which was included on the soundtrack for "Little Big Superstar" along with co-host Makisig Morales[46]. She also took the lead role in ABS-CBN's primetime drama Pangarap Na Bituin opposite Jericho Rosales, along with Maja Salvador and Rica Peralejo as The Jewel Sisters, also with Nikki Gil[47].
She staged her second major solo concert on July 14, 2007 at the Araneta Coliseum entitled Sarah Geronimo In Motion[48]. Sarah also concluded Sarah Geronimo In Motion US tour last August-September 2007.[49]
Shortly after staging her second solo major concert, she released her fourth studio album entitled Taking Flight that achieved Platinum. Taking Flight's includes singles like "I'll Be Alright" and "Ikaw".[50]
Sarah Geronimo is the youngest concert performer to have filled up the Araneta Coliseum[51], moreover she is also the first artist in the history of the Philippine Music Industry to receive a platinum award for a DVD copy of her concert.[52][53]
2008: Just Me
Sarah once again reunited with her co-champions Erik Santos, Rachelle Ann Go and Christian Bautista in a Valentines Concert at the Araneta Colesium, entitled "OL4LUV".[54]
Geronimo released the "In Motion" DVD on February 27, 2008 filmed at the Araneta Coliseum and reached platinum[55]. Before Geronimo release her 5th studio album, she released "I'll Be Here" as the 4th and final single of Taking Flight. She collaborated with Backstreet Boys member Howie Dorough, in the song "I'll Be There" produced by Christian de Walden and it will be included in her upcoming album entitled "Just Me". She also announced that the album will be promoted by September 2008[56].
Last July 30, 2008, her debut movie under Star Cinema and Viva Films with Filipino actor John Lloyd Cruz entitled "A Very Special Love" was released, and the movie grossed P 180 million and and grabbed the second spot on the Highest-Grossing Film of All-Time in the Philippines[57]. She also recorded her own version of the song "Very Special Love" for the movie which was then included in the repackaged edition of "Taking Flight"[58].
On the 19th day of October 2008, 10:00 PM, ABS-CBN aired her 2007 solo concert in Araneta Coliseum, entitled Sarah Geronimo in Motion.[59]
By November, she will stage another major solo concert in Araneta Coliseum entitled, The Next One[60]. And later this year, Geronimo will release her first ever Christmas Album and it will be produced and arranged by Mr. Ryan Cayabyab and she will have her Special Christmas Concert at the Araneta Coliseum. And early next year, her follow-up movie with John Lloyd Cruz will be released as Star Cinema's first offering for 2009[61].
Discography
After winning the singing contest in IBC-13, Sarah Geronimo released her debut album on September 11, 2003, Popstar A Dream Come True and was certfied 7x platinum, making it the Best-Selling album for 2003. It include hits such as To Love You More, Forever's Not Enough and Sa Iyo[62]. A year after, her album, Sweet Sixteen was released and reached 3x Platinum[63].
Her 3rd studio album, Becoming, out in the market in 2006, received 1x platinum[64]. And her 4th in 2007, Taking Flight also soar to a platinum record and made hits such as I'll Be Alright and Ikaw[65].
Some of her other albums also received platinum, such as The Other Side: Live Album[66] and Bituing Walang Ningning Soundtrack[67].
Currently, Sarah Geronimo is promoting her 5th studio album, Just Me. It includes a duet with Backstreet Boys member, Howie Dorough, entitled I'll Be There.[68]

Sarah Geronimo was the first artist to receive a platinum award for a DVD copy of a concert, it was "The Other Side" in 2005[69]. And lately she did it once again, the DVD copy of the concert "Sarah Geronimo in Motion" soar to a platinum record[70] . Currently, she is the only one who has a platinum record not only for one but for two DVD copies of a concert.

Concerts & Tours
Sarah Geronimo started to stage concerts and tours in the Philippines as well as in other countries after winning the singing contest she joined. Two of the most prominent concerts she performed are: "The Other Side"[71] and "Sarah Geronimo in Motion"[72], that both happened in Araneta Coliseum and confirmed to be sold out. Furthermore, these performances were also presented in various cities in and out of the country.
Other popular concerts she did was with her contemporaries in "Star For A Night", and co-singers in the musical variety show, ASAP, where she is a regular.
By November of 2008, she will stage another huge concert in Araneta Coliseum, entitled "The Next One".[73]

Movie and Television Projects
Sarah Geronimo is not really popular in Philippine Cinema until Star Cinema and VIVA Films collaborated to produce a film starring her and John Lloyd Cruz in a romantic-comedy motion picture, entitled "A Very Special Love". Surprisingly, the movie was rated A and earned a remarkable PHP 180 million throughout its 8-week domestic release. Currently, "A Very Special Love" is confirmed as the 2nd Highest-Grossing Film of All-Time, moreover it is the Highest-Grossing Romantic-Comedy Film of All-Time in the Philippines[74]. Furthermore, she will have another film by 2009, as Star Cinema's first offering.[75]
Regarding her Television career, Sarah Geronimo has casted on soap operas like, "Bituing Walang Ningning"[76] and "Pangarap na Bituin"[77]. She is also a mainstay in ASAP, a weekly musical variety show on ABS-CBN[78].
