Krishnagiri (Tamil:கிரிஷ்ணகிரி) is a municipal city and the headquarters of Krishnagiri District in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Mango is cultivated as the main crop and its considered as the birth place for Mangoes.

Geography and Demographics

Krishnagiri is located at 12°32′N 78°14′E / 12.53°N 78.23°E / 12.53; 78.23^[1]. It has an average elevation of 631 metres (2070 feet).

As of 2001 India census^[2], Krishnagiri had a population of 65,024. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Krishnagiri has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 77%, and female literacy is 66%. In Krishnagiri, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Krishnagiri and Mangoes

The major crop of Krishnagiri district with 300.17 km² of cultivation is Mango. The district produces 300,000 tones annually. Almost 20% of the Mango varieties like ‘Thothapuri’ and ‘Alphonso’ produced in this district is processed into pulp. Other than Mango pulp processing, tons of mango are processed into juice every year in this district.

Approximately 25 industries located in this district process Mango. Lots of population in this district get employment through Mango cultivation directly and other labor class are benefited through employment in processing units of the fruit. Apart from cultivation and processing, about 150 mango nurseries which produce Mango saplings in and around ‘Santur Village‘ employ people and give employment opportunities for the agricultural laborers.

The district exports mango based products worth Rs.1,000 million.

Under the horticulture development program, the government owned horticulture farms are functioning. Through these units about 3 lakhs of fruit saplings are produced and distributed under different schemes.

While the following Three National Highways originates from Krishnagiri,

1. Krishnagir-Ranipet (NH-46)
2. Puducherry-Krishnagiri (NH-66)
3. Krishnagiri-Madanapalli (NH-219)

NH -7 the Longest National Highway of India connecting (Varanasi - Kanyakumari) Passes thro' it.

The nearest railway Junction is Jolarpet (60 km) and the nearest railway station is Rayakottai (30 km).

The nearest Airport is at Bangalore Airport (120 km)

Tourism

KRP (Krishnagiri Reservoir project) dam constructed in 1960's during the rule of the then Chief Minister Kamaraj, located near the town is a nice picnic spot.Sayed Basha hills has a fort that was used by tippu sulthan is in krishnagiri.

Politics

Krishnagiri assembly constituency is part of Krishnagiri (Lok Sabha constituency).^[3]

Unique Family

During the 70's,Mr.M.G.Venkatapathy Naidu has set a goal of educating his complete family of seven members.Though his financial situation was not allowing to make his dream come true,he borrowed money from private resources at 36% intrest rate,selling most of his property.By the year 1990 the seven memeber family were positioned in society as doctors,engineers,lawyers,etc.Tody they serve globally across different countries in key positions of national/multinational companies. This family is well known in Krishnagiri District for their achievement
