Gate City is a town in Scott County, Virginia, United States. The population was 2,159 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Scott CountyTemplate:GR.

Gate City is part of the KingsportBristol (TN)Bristol (VA) Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is a component of the Johnson City–Kingsport–Bristol, TN-VA Combined Statistical Area – commonly known as the "Tri-Cities" region.

History

Gate City is strategically situated near the significant and historic Moccasin Gap gap in Clinch Mountain. Its original role (when the city was still known as "Estillbille") was to provide services to travelers, including Daniel Boone, and it developed into a commercial and social hub for the surrounding farming communities of Scott County.

Gate City is a small town tucked against a huge mountain. VDOT plans for a large portion of the mountain at Moccasin Gap to be shorn away.[citation needed]

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.1 square miles (5.3 km²), of which, 2.0 square miles (5.3 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.97%) is water.

It should be noted that the town has expanded its boundaries since the census via a boundary adjustment agreement with the county.

Gate City is located on U.S. Routes 23 and 421 near the Tennessee state line.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 2,159 people, 984 households, and 604 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,058.8 people per square mile (408.6/km²). There were 1,119 housing units at an average density of 548.8/sq mi (211.8/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 95.69% White, 3.80% African American, 0.09% Native American, and 0.42% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.42% of the population.

There were 984 households out of which 23.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.9% were married couples living together, 11.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.6% were non-families. 36.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.16 and the average family size was 2.81.

In the town the population was spread out with 20.0% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 22.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 87.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $31,875, and the median income for a family was $48,068. Males had a median income of $35,875 versus $22,292 for females. The per capita income for the town was $19,268. About 4.1% of families and 13.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.9% of those under age 18 and 22.9% of those age 65 or over.
