Frequently asked questions

  • Where can I learn more about editing Wikipedia?
  • Why was the link I added removed from an article?
    • Typically, links are removed because they fail the external links guideline. Although many links are deleted because they were placed by spammers, links to good sites are also removed on a regular basis. This is because Wikipedia isn't a directory service; the mere fact a site exists does not mean it warrants a link.
  • Why was my article deleted?
    • Pages can be deleted for many reasons; there are very specific criteria that govern the process. Please review this article for more information.
  • Why was information relating to my company or organization removed?
  • Why were my spelling changes reverted?
Wikipedia's Manual of Style recommends the use of regional varieties of English, based on the topic and the article's contribution history. Please avoid changing spellings unless they differ from the appropriate version. Most spell checking software can be configured to use British and American English; some extend this to include other varieties such as Canadian or Australian English.

Why did you remove my edit? It was trivia, lots of articles have trivia. 76.200.161.227 (talk) 05:01, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Online Land Planning

Hi Ckatz: I respectfully ask that my last post with a link to Online Land Planning {http://www.onlinelandplanning.com] be included. This link meets the requirements in the wiki guidelines that you cited to me as a third party reference and an indisputable fact. But I also see your point - it appears that I am doing it for promotional purposes. This is not the case.

I wrote the original wiki entry for this page and have worked with wiki editors to bring an objective approach. My last edit is to show a practical application of a private business utilizing the benefits of land planning & internet technology. It is not in the main body of the text and its also included in the appropriate flow of lines that have been edited by others - not a new paragraph to highlight the link.

My objective is sincere and I can not find another example.Obviously, I don't want to be banned from editing and I would appreciate your help on letting this link be included. Thank you for your time and effort when considering this request.

Regards, Lispp Lispp

vernon bartlett

hi! i recently included a link on the vernon bartlett and bridgwater by election of 1938 to a website resourse dedicated to vernon bartlett. which includes all anyone could want to know , however 24 hours later the links were removed, as far as i can see they did not contravene any wikipedia policy, why were they removed? thanks

from the jam

i included a link on the jams page for "from the jam". as the band features 2 out of 3 original members and ftj are spoken of in the jams page (aleit out of date info as a new album is on the way) i would have thought a link to relevant info was required, why was the link to fromthejam.net removed? regards

Re: Request to restore images

I'm sorry, but I've deleted those two files since no source of origin has provided. Since en.wikipedia also requires to mention the source of origin, I think that you will be unable to reupload here.

BTW an user has found a alternate for File:Uranian moon montage.jpg and uploaded on the old filename with all informations required. 555 17:23, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Revision history of Risks to civilization, humans and planet Earth

I might be missing something, but is there a reason why "Being disoriented by a nearby bolide" and "Being burnt by the burst of the gamma ray" are thought to be better examples than "Having possessions stolen" and "Death", in the table in the Risks to civilization, humans and planet Earth article? (You reverted me when I made the change.) The source we're actually drawing from here uses "Your car is stolen" and "Death" for the two personal-level examples, and they seem much clearer than the obscure language of "bolide" and the unnecessarily repeated context of "gamma ray burst". --McGeddon (talk) 20:23, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am busy in real life, too.

FYI: The info for York University have waited one year for a 2007-to-2008 ranking difference. Next year, there will be a three-year moving average, too. I assure you that you received an effort or two from me to discuss these topics. You never responded and that is OK. Well, now is another good chance, CKatz. Since we seem bound to have rankings, why not present them in a uniform and equitable way? Current rank, change from 2007 & three-year moving average seem to be uniform and fair. Do you have anything substantive to add to your dismissive "minor edit'?
