Tony James Lochhead (born 12 January 1982, in Tauranga, New Zealand) is a football defender from New Zealand who currently plays for Wellington Phoenix FC of the Hyundai A-League.

Club career

Lochhead went to America to play college soccer for UC Santa Barbara in 2001. Lochhead would play for the UCSB Soccer team from 2001 to 2004, starting all 83 games he played, and setting a school record for minutes. Lochhead was named first-team All-Big West in 2003, and was a second team All-American and the Big West Defensive Player of the Year in 2004. As a senior, Lochhead helped lead Santa Barbara to the NCAA Championship, where the Gauchos lost to Indiana on penalty kicks.

Following his career at Santa Barbara, Lochhead was drafted 33rd overall in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft by the New England Revolution. However, at that time he elected not to sign with MLS. He signed with New England in September 2005, some months into the season. On April 13, 2007, the Revolution waived Lochhead, presumably to free up a senior roster spot for former UC Santa Barbara teammate Bryan Byrne, who was signed the same day.

On 11 May 2007, Wellington Phoenix of Australia's A-League announced the signing of Lochhead on a two-year contract.[1]

On 29 July 2008, it was announced that Lochhead was given a trial with English Premier League side Middlesbrough.[2] However, on 14 August 2008 it was announced on the Evening Gazette website that Tony had returned to Wellington Phoenix.[3]

International career

Lochhead is also a promising player for the New Zealand national team, and started every match for the team during 2006 FIFA World Cup Qualifying. He has represented New Zealand at Under-17 and Under-23 level as well.
