Plot summary
A young boy is the main character of this novel, called Asta's son and nothing else. His world is turned upside-down when his mother dies, and the steward, John Aycliffe, accuses him of stealing from Lord Furnival's manor, and the priest, his only friend, is murdered. The steward declares him a wolf's head, and his only choice is to run. But before he does, he finds out that he has a name: Crispin. While escaping, he meets Bear, a travelling jester who forces Crispin to come with him. Crispin sets off to find out the secret behind his mother's cross of lead, and to find who he really is. As the book progresses, Crispin runs into John Aycliffe again. Crispin runs back to warn Bear, who was later captured trying to protect Crispin. Crispin had an oppurtunity to leave the city and run, but he stayed and freed Bear from prison. In the end, the duo earns their freedom.
