Affliction: Day of Reckoning was a mixed martial arts event promoted by Affliction Entertainment on January 24, 2009, in Anaheim, California at the Honda Center.[1] It was originally scheduled for October 11, 2008, at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada with a different fight card, but was eventually moved back.[1]

Results

The main event featured World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts (WAMMA) Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko defending his belt against former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei Arlovski.[2][3]

Also on the card was Josh "Babyface Assassin" Barnett who took on Gilbert Yvel. In a light-heavyweight match current Strikeforce Champion Renato "Babalu" Sobral took on Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou.[4] Matt Lindland was re-assigned from a 195-pound catchweight bout with Sobral to a middleweight matchup against former UFC Light-Heavyweight Champion Vitor Belfort.[4]

Headlining the undercard which was broadcast on HDNet Fights, the last IFL Light-Heavyweight Champion Vladimir Matyushenko took on PRIDE veteran Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.[5]

PPV matches

Barnett defeated Yvel via submission (strikes) at 2:55 of the third round.
Belfort defeated Lindland via KO (punches) at 0:37 of the first round.
Sobral defeated Sokoudjou via submission (anaconda choke) at 2:37 of the second round.
Buentello defeated Sidelnikov via TKO (doctor stoppage) at 4:18 of the third round.
Lauzon defeated Green via submission (rear naked choke) at 4:55 of the first round.

HDNet matches

Nogueira defeated Matyushenko via TKO (knee and punches) at 4:26 of the second round.
Davis defeated Quach via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).
Rios defeated Duarte via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).
Cooper defeated Speight via TKO (punches) at 4:10 of the second round.

Yvel controversy

The controversial[7] Gilbert Yvel was signed after Aleksander Emelianenko was unable to be licensed in time.[8] A hearing by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) is scheduled as to whether to permit Yvel to fight at this event.[9] Yvel will not be cleared to fight until he meets privately with CSAC Assistant Executive Officer Bill Douglas and Chief Athletic Inspector Dean Lohuis shortly after the start of the New Year to determine whether he will be licensed to compete.[10]

The CSAC has cleared Yvel to fight and granted him a license to compete against Barnett.[11]

Lineup Changes

At one point, there were rumors that the event would be a co-promotion with renowned boxing promotion Golden Boy Promotions that would feature both boxing and MMA matches. Those plans were changed, however, according to Affliction vice-president Tom Atencio.[12]

Originally scheduled for October 11, 2008, the main event was to have been Andrei Arlovski against Fedor Emelianenko for the WAMMA heavyweight title, but Fedor had to pull out due to a hand injury.[13] Affliction then announced that the main event was to feature a bout between two former UFC heavyweight champions, Andrei Arlovski and Josh Barnett.[14] When it was announced that the event would take place on its current date, January 24, 2009, it was also confirmed that the event would feature the original WAMMA heavyweight title match between Emelianenko and Arlovski.

Matt Lindland was scheduled to face former UFC light-heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort on the October 11 card, but a hand injury forced Belfort to withdraw from the fight.[15] Renato Sobral was initially scheduled as Belfort's replacement,[16] until Lindland's reassignment to again fight Belfort. On January 13, 2009, it was announced that Bao Quach will replace Mark Hominick on the undercard.[17]

Chris Horodecki did not receive medical clearance for this fight, and has been removed from the card. [18] Horodecki has a bulging disc in his neck, costing him about 80% of his strength in his right arm. Affliction has announced that Bobby Green will take Horodecki's spot against Lauzon.[19] Sherdog.com has confirmed that Lauzon/Green will open up the event. [20]

Other entertainment

On August 20, 2008, Affliction announced that Ozzy Osbourne would be the musical guest at the event.[21]
