Peter Travers

Peter Travers (fl. late 20th century) is an American film critic. He has been the regular film reviewer for, in turn, People and Rolling Stone magazines.

Career

According to efilmcritic.com, Travers is the most blurbed film critic. Prior to writing for Rolling Stone, Travers was a film critic for People magazine from 1984–1988. He is known for his basic writing style that eschews more sophisticated analysis for an easy-to-read and often very opinionated form. Travers is frequently critical of the Academy Awards. He has named The Godfather as his favorite film. Some of the contemporary directors he is most receptive to based on ratings and place in year end top-10 lists include Martin Scorsese, David Lynch, Quentin Tarantino, Alexander Payne, Tim Burton, Clint Eastwood, Peter Jackson, Pedro Almodovar, and Ang Lee.

Some of the films that Travers has assigned his top rating (four stars) include: The Big Lebowski, Letters from Iwo Jima, King Kong, Sideways, Mystic River, United 93, Brokeback Mountain, Far From Heaven, Gangs of New York, Kill Bill Volume 2, Babel, Syriana, Volver, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, The Departed, Borat, and most recently No Country for Old Men, Atonement, There Will Be Blood, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, Milk, and WALL-E. Travers didn't use star-ratings until 2002. On the opposite end of the rating spectrum, he has given his lowest rating of 'zero stars' to Bad Boys 2, The Dukes of Hazzard, Fool's Gold, Norbit, and Bride Wars.

Travers named Blue Velvet the best film of the 1980s.
