Who Wants to be a Millionaire? was an Irish game show based on the original British format of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?. The show was hosted by legendary Irish television icon Gay Byrne. The main goal of the game was first to get into the hot seat by completing a chronological order task correctly and in the fastest time, and then to win (earlier IR£) 1 million by answering 15 multiple-choice questions correctly. There were three lifelines - fifty fifty, phone a friend and ask the audience. Who wants to be a millionaire was broadcast from 2000 to mid-2002. It was shown on the Irish TV station RTÉ. The show ended broadcasting because it didn't have any sponsor. When a contestant got the fifth question correct, he left with at least (earlier IR£) 1,000. When a contestant got the tenth question correct, he left with at least (earlier IR£) 32,000.

After the local show ended in 2002, the original UK version of the show began to allow (and continue to allow) contestants from the Republic of Ireland to enter, and thus the Irish version merged within the UK version, which is shown on the RTE network in addition to the ITV network in the UK. Originally, in the local Irish version, the questions were presented in a purely Irish context, and allowed residents of Northern Ireland (which is part of the nation known as the United Kingdom) to enter, whereas the UK version only targetted British viewers, but as the local Irish show merged with the original UK show, the questions on the newly merged British/Irish show (with Chris Tarrant as the host) now present questions targetting both British and Irish contestants. The top prize of the British version is GBP£1,000,000, which will be converted to euros as the Irish contestant returns to Ireland.
