D. Arthur Haycock

Served as Secretary to LDS Church Presidents Heber J Grant, George Albert Smith, Joseph Fielding Smith, Harold B Lee, Spencer W Kimball and Ezra Taft Benson.

As Secretary he handled most of the correspondence for the Prophet himself and scheduled the prophets meetings as well as accomponied the Prophets on there many trips throughout the world were he aided in the planning and note taking of the meetings.

He was born in Utah and lived in various locations in Idaho and Utah growing up. As a young man he served a mission to Hawaii. Upon his return he married Maureen____ and took a job at the Deseret News. However he persisted in seeking Church Employment and finally was appointed as Heber J Grants personal secretary. He also served for George Albert Smith. He served many times as chauffer and confident to the prophet as well.

Upon David O McKays presidency McKay kept his personal secretary Clare Middlemes and Haycock was called to serve as Joseph Andersons assistant. He served as an assistant to Ezra TAft Benson as secretary of agriculture as well before his call to preside over a mission in Hawaii.

Upon his return he again took employment with the Deseret News. Upon McKays death he again became personal secretary to Joseph Fielding Smith and aided him in his many travels. On Smiths deah he also assisted Harold B Lee on his travels as well. He took President Lee to LDS hospital when he collapsed from exhaustion and was there when Lee's death was inimient. That is when he called the first presidency and Spencer W Kimball as Kimball as President of the Twelve would be President upon Lee's iniment death. He saw the wheels of the presidency turn.

Upon Kimballs presidency he served him by traveling with him and again hanling correspondence. When Kimballs health made it impossible for him to travel frequently or even leave the apartment Haycock went with Gordon B Hinckley to his apartment frequently when Kimball was able to respond to some descisions. Haycock also read many of Kimballs talks when Kimball did not have the strength to address the conference sessions himself. He was also a speaker at Spencer W Kimballs funeral.

On Kimballs death he served briefly as Personal Secretary to Ezra TAft Benson before his call to a temple president in Hawaii. Following his return from Hawaii as Temple President he retired from day to day affairs in the church but served on Temple Committe for Bountiful and as a temple sealer. He died following heart surgery in February of 1994.
