History

Banka Kombëtare Tregtare is a bank in Albania founded in 1993 by the union of the Albanian Trade Bank (BTSH) and by the National Bank of Albania (BKSH). BTSH was founded in 1991 as a result of the Separation of the activities of the Albanian State Bank, whose main activity was the management of operations of foreign trade entities with the former socialist countries.


BKSH was established in 1992 with a second subdivision of the State Bank of Albania with the purpose of managing commercial activity within the state entities.

Banka Kombëtare Tregtare (National Commercial Bank) was established as joint stock Companies in July 1997 with a capital of 2.7 billion lek.


BKT completed the privatization process in 2000. The Albanian Parliament approved on the 6th of July 2000, contract of sale between the Ministry of Finance on the one hand and the International Consortium of Investors (60% stake), International Financial Corporation (20%) and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (20%) on the other hand . Transfer of ownership became effective on 17th of October 2000. The new shareholders paid 10 million dollars, resulting in a strong capitalization bank.


Under the direction of new shareholders and new management, consisting almost entirely by a foreign staff with broad international experience, the BKT undertook radical transformations in 2001, for the construction of infrastructure and operational restructuring every aspect of the bank starting from personnel, procedures to the infrastructure of information technology and making its human resources in a new team of dynamic professionals committed to achieve levels of excellence.


In February 2003, with a decision of the General Meeting of shareholders, capital paid in the amount of the bank reached 14.64 million dollars, the return on BKT bank capitilized the Albanian banking system even more.


The year 2006 began with a new page for BKT. To obtain approval from the Bank of Albania and the decision of the special judging by 9 June 2006 approved the transfer of shares which consisted in passing the 60% + 2 shares of the BKT in favor of Calik-Seker Konsorsiyum Yatirim A.S.
