Jones Inlet
Jones Inlet begins on the westernmost tip of a 17 mile long Jones Beach barrier island that runs along Long Island's southern shore. The Loop Parkway, located to the Inlets west end is where Lido Beach and Point Lookout border one another, connecting the (Long Beach Island) to Jones Beach. West End is located in Jones Beach State Park at the entrance of Jones Inlet. In the Township of Hempstead, Nassau County New York. (Jones Inlet, NY).
There are very few mariners who know Jones Inlet - and how treacherous its shoals can be to boaters.
The State Boat Channel connects South Oyster Bay, The Great South Bay to the Atlantic Ocean and separates Jones Beach from Point Lookout.
Over the past four years, three boaters have reportedly died as a result of accidents due to the inlet's shallow waters.
But while there is an unwanted wealth of sand in the inlet, there is a dearth of it immediately to the west in the seaside hamlet of Point Lookout. [[ Erosion]] from storms and natural wave currents has eaten away much of the sand from Point Lookout's beaches, leaving its 600 or so homes dangerously close to the sea, especially in case of a hurricane.
The Army Corps of Engineers dredging the inlet and piping 700,000 cubic yards of sand onto Point Lookout's shoreline, is being held up in Albany.
Former Gov. Spitzer has until midnight tonight to sign or veto legislation, which passed both houses last month, authorizing the spending of $7.6 million to dredge the inlet and restore Point Lookout's badly eroded shoreline.
