The Seahouses Festival is an annual cultural event in Northumberland, UK.
It began in 1999, evolving from a small Sea Shanty festival into a more broadly based cultural celebration. Located around Seahouses' harbour with the natural amphitheatre of Harbour Hill as the focal point, the festival features a variety of music, art, film and drama alongside childrens activities and street performers.
Community groups, artists and historians work with the local people throughout the year on a variety of projects and events which culminate in the festival weekend.
2009 festival
The Seahouses Festival 2009 takes place on Friday 19th to Sunday 21st June and this year celebrates the natural environment of the North Northumberland coastline area, its wildlife and maritime heritage.
The outdoor and indoor music stages are hosting a mix of musical styles: big band, jazz, folk, rock, indie and classical. Performers include: Maybe Myrtle Tyrtle, The Briganties, Dan Walsh, The Alnwick Pipers, The Watchorns. The Blackthorn trio, The Keelers, Monkey's Fist.
It also features an environmental Film Festival, showing: ‘In Fading Light’ (1989); ‘Building The Future: Energy’ (2007); ‘The Lorax’ (1972); ‘Cul de Sac’ (Polanski, 1966); ‘Age of Stupid’ (2009); ‘Seahouses: Natural Heritage’ (2009); Grace Darling (2009).
Northumbrian artist Sara Riseborough will undertake a specially commissioned large scale seascape painting on the Harbour site. An exhibition displaying work from twelve Northumbrian artists, depicting the landscape of the area, will be hung along the length of Main Street, turning the shopping area into a public art gallery.
Other activities include a series of nature exploration events hosted by the AONB, a local food and craft festival, workshops, and a beach festival with competitions and games for children.
