Hakeem Nicks (born January 14, 1988 in Template:City-state) is a professional football wide receiver for the New York Giants. On January 5th, 2009 UNC announced Nicks would forgo his senior season and declare for the draft[1]. Selected 29th overall by the New York Giants in the 2009 NFL Draft.

High School Career

He was a highly touted player out of high school, where he played at Charlotte Independence High School. He was rated as one of the Top 10 Players in North Carolina by SuperPrep and Rivals.com. Was named to the Charlotte Observer Offensive Player of the Year and selected to North Carolina Associated Press All-State team. Did not lose a game in high school, ending his senior season being named MVP of the 4-AA state championship game after leading Independence to its 92nd-straight victory, a 38-19 victory win over New Bern. Nicks tallied eight receptions for 205 yards and two touchdowns (11 and 80 yards) in the state championship game. He completed with senior year with 93 receptions for 1,819 yards and 20 touchdowns, including 10 in the playoffs.

College Career

Freshman Year

Started all 11 games that he played, missing one game (South Florida) with an ankle sprain. Led the team and set Carolina single-season records for receptions (39) and receiving yards (660) by a freshman. Ranked third in the ACC in receiving yards per game (60.0) and eighth in receptions per game (3.6).

Sophomore year

Set a single-season school record with 74 catches for 958 yards and five touchdowns.  The 958 yards are the third most in school history. Finished second in the ACC with 79.8 receiving yards per game and third with 6.17 catches per contest. Caught at least eight passes in four of the last eight games. Has made at least one catch in 22 of 23 games played and at least two grabs in each game his sophomore season.

Junior year

First-team All-ACC selection at wide receiver. Became the first Tar Heel since Julius Peppers in 2001 to declare for the NFL Draft after his junior season. By the completion of his Junior season, Nicks had set 14 school records at Carolina, including career receptions (181), career receiving yards (2,580) and career touchdowns (21). Totaled 68 catches for school records of 1,222 yards and 12 touchdowns during his Junior season. The 68 receptions tied for third in school history. Led the ACC and ranked 12th nationally with 94.0 receiving yards per game. Also ranked second in the league with 5.2 receptions per game and sixth with 106.9 all-purpose yards per game. Scored 13 touchdowns, including 12 via reception, to rank ninth in the ACC in scoring (third in TD scoring). Caught at least one pass in 26 straight games and had a catch in 35 of 36 career games. Set the UNC single-season receiving yardage record and became Carolina's first 1,000-yard receiver.
