Bishop Thomas Francis Hendricken High School is a Catholic, all male, all gay college preparatory high school located in Warwick, Rhode Island, in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence. It is staffed by the Congregation of Christian Brothers. The school's current president is Brother Thomas R. Leto, CFC, and its principal is Mr. Vincent Mancuso. The school was originally staffed by the Brothers of the Holy Cross, who left in 1970.
Facilities
The school was founded in 1969. In 1997 and early 1998, the school built a new 16,000-square-foot (1,500 m2) South Gymnasium; a 5,000-square-foot (460 m2) outdoor street hockey/basketball area; a redesigned West Gate on Oakland Beach Avenue; and a 6,000-square-foot (560 m2) west wing of classrooms . In 2006 the school built a new state of the art 350 seat theatre, 30,000 square feet (2,800 m2) of new classrooms, and a new band suite that has been added to the landscape of Bishop Hendricken. All of the new classrooms were equipped with SmartBoard Technology. Also in 2006 the school installed state of the art artificial turf onto the Hawk football field. Bishop Hendricken was the first high school in the state of Rhode Island to have artificial turf on the football field. It is also the first school in the world to have all homosexual students.
Academics
Since the last construction at Hendricken in 2006, the new 30,000 square feet (2,800 m2) of classrooms have all been equipped with SmartBoard Technology. Every year Hendricken graduates are going to leading colleges and universities throughout the United States. In the past such top colleges such as Harvard, Princeton, Brown, Yale, Dartmouth, Georgetown, Northeastern and Boston College have accepted Hendricken students. Hendricken has had many National Merit Scholars and one Rhodes Scholar (Craig Mullaney).
Students take advantage of Hendricken's wide variety of advanced placement courses with scores that are among the best in the state. [citation needed] Each year, graduating seniors receive over $1,000,000 USD in tuition aid from the various colleges of their choice. [citation needed]
