'Louise Fresco Odilia' (officially, Ottilie Louise Fresco) (Meppel, February 11 1952) is a Dutch scientist, director and writer.

Life

Fresco studied agricultural sociology of the non-western areas in Wageningen. After her study she conducted fieldwork among other things, in Papua New Guinea Haiti and Burkina Faso. In 1986 she did a PhD on the cassava production in Africa.

Between 1991 and 1997 she worked as professor of crop production systems of the tropics and sub-tropics at Wageningen University. Until mid-2006 she was the Deputy Director-General for Agriculture of the FAO at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Fresco is a member of the Supervisory Board of Rabobank Nederland. In the autumn of 2006 she gave the Duisenberg Lecture in Singapore, entitled "Biomass for food or fuel: Is there a dilemma?"

Louise Fresco also wrote columns in NRC Handelsblad (section Education and Science) and literary criticism in Het Parool and Vrij Nederland. She also published a collection of three novels, a collection of essays and the essay Schaduwdenkers en Lichtzoekers (Huizinga Lecture 1998). Her novel De Utopisten was nominated in March 2008 for the Libris literatuurprijs.

On May 11, 2007 it was announced that Fresco Jacqueline Cramer it will follow as Chair of the Social and Economic Council (SER). Cramer left earlier due to her appointment as minister.
