Donte Charles is a fictional character in the popular BBC television drama series Waterloo Road. He is portrayed by Adam Thomas.

Background

It was revealed in the first episode that Donte's Mother had abandoned him several years previously, when he was around the age of twelve. His Dad brought him up, but apparently he had to deal with his dad being on the wrong side of the law as it was also revealed that Clarence has a criminal record.

School and Personal Life

Donte was seen in the first episode with his girlfriend Chlo Grainger. He was illegally driving his father's car when he crashed into a lorry, killing his friend Adam Deardon and leaving Holly Tattersall in a coma for several weeks. Chlo suffered a broken arm in the crash. Donte was driving while intoxicated, but Chlo caused the accident when she obscured his vision.

Donte spent three months on remand before being found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving, and received an 18-month suspended sentence.

Donte married Chlo in the first episode of Series 3, but their marriage ended when she slept with her sister's boyfriend Brett Aspinall and Donte caught them. Chlo ran away and did not return for two weeks.

Donte later began a relationship with Celine Dixon. However, he did rescue Chlo from the smoke-filled toilets at the end of the series, when deranged Stuart Hordley started a fire at the school. Chlo's stepfather Tom Clarkson helped Donte in the rescue.

In the Series 4 opener, It was revealed that Donte and Chlo had got back together, despite Celine's alleged pregnancy (her character has not been seen since and there has been no mention as to whether she really was pregnant), and were planning to get married again properly. Donte spent much of the episode working on a van he had bought with some money he had borrowed from his father, which would ultimately become Chlo's mobile hairdressing business. Chlo was initially unimpressed but Donte kept on working until he cut himself.

Searching for a cloth, Donte entered the school after it had been evacuated to find an armed Denzil Kelly, who fired a shot. At first it had looked as if Donte had been shot, much to horror of Chlo, but Donte's only injury was the cut.

Financial worries

The business idea for Chlo to have her own mobile hair salon goes belly up. Desperate for a way to make money, Donte recklessly organises an underground boxing match, in which Bolton Smilie participates. Rachel Mason and Rob Cleaver however discovered this and halted the match.

On 18 February 2009, Donte discovers that Chlo is pregnant with his child after she does a pregnancy test in the girls toilets. Donte is very happy about this, Chlo however is not sure whether or not having the baby is the right thing to do.

It was revealed by Chris Geere (Matt Wilding) that Donte will be leaving at the end of Series 4.[1]

Baby Izzy

After revealing in episode 16 that she wanted to give their baby up for adoption, Chlo went into premature labour following Donte announcing that he wanted to raise their baby himself and he was filing for a divorce. The baby was in breech and was delivered in the girl's toilets. Upon realising how much Chlo meant to him, he revealed that he was willing to let their daughter be put up for adoption if it meant he and Chlo could be together, however after she discovered just how much he was giving up for her, Chlo decided she wanted to keep the baby and raise it with Donte. She was named Izzy after her late mother Izzie Redpath who was stabbed in the final episode of Series 2.
