NYC Prep is a reality television program on the Bravo channel. NYC Prep chronicles the lives of six teenagers in Manhattan's elite high school scene. NYC Prep will follow six Manhattan teenagers in their daily lives as they attend events such as weekend parties, shopping sprees, charity events and dinner parties.[1] The show has drawn many comparisons to the hit CW television show, Gossip Girl because both shows revolve around the lives of Manhattan's elite teenagers. [2] [3].

Criticisms

There has been some criticism among those who attend other NYC prep schools that the schools attended by the cast are in no way elite. Many other members of the New York City private school community have stated that the experiences shown on the show are not similar to how life actually is for most Upper East Siders. One student who attended school with both PC and Jesse said, "The show is so wrong in how it portrays everyone involved and students of NYC private schools that it makes me laugh." Many people think about it as a re-creation of Gossip Girl than a reality TV show. [13]. Filming was not allowed during school, nor were any school names specifically mentioned on the show, as the schools desired to distance themselves from the show. Dorothy Hutcheson, head of Nightingale-Bamford school, sent a letter home to all Nightingale parents, warning them about the show and the potentially negative portrayal of the school on the show [14].

Additionally, an article titled "Who's Afraid of 'NYC Prep'?" appeared in the style section of the New York Times. The article ended with a quote by Victoria Goldman, the author of “The Manhattan Guide to Private Schools and Selective Public Schools,” stating that “The schools on this show are all at the bottom, there would never be a Brearley girl on this show.” [15].
