Ramon Vega (born 14 June, 1971 in Olten, Switzerland) is a former Swiss footballer of Spanish descent.

Vega was one of five children to be born in Switzerland, with his siblings born in his parents' native city of Madrid.

Early life

Vega attended school in Trimbach and went on to study for a degree in Banking and Management at the Zurich Business School.

Club career

Vega began his career in Zurich with the Grasshoppers Football Club, a Swiss First Division team in 1989, winning league titles and cups with the team. After the Euro 1996 in England, he was signed by Cagliari Calcio in the Serie A. Staying there for just seven months, he moved in 1997 to Tottenham Hotspur, a Premier league football team, for a transfer fee of £3.75 million. Vega won the Worthington Cup with Spurs in 1999. In 2000, he moved to Celtic Football Club, a Scottish Premier league football team where he won three trophies in six months. Vega ended his career with Watford in Division One of the English league.

National team career

He first played for Switzerland in 1993, subsequently playing for his country in the World Cup in 1994 in the USA. Vega also played in Euro 1996 in England. His national team career spanned over 28 caps.

Vega also captained Switzerland.

Post playing career

After his retirement, Vega became a founding member of the Duet Group (2002), a financial group specialising in asset management and private equity. In 2006, Vega also founded the Matterhorn Capital Rosalp, a Swiss real estate company focusing on the development of luxury hotels worldwide. The first hotel to be developed will be in Verbier, Switzerland. Vega also opened "Ramon Vega's Soccer School" in Marbella, Spain.

In February 2009, Vega unsuccessfully bid to purchase the Premier League team and FA Cup holder Portsmouth F.C from its then current owner, Alexandre Gaydamak. He was consistently unable to demonstrate an ability to secure financing for his proposal.[1][2][3]
