The Dickenson County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) is the primary law enforcement agency servicing 16,395 people within 332 square miles (860 km2) of jurisdiction within Dickenson County, VA.

History

The DCSO was created after the county was formed in 1880. At that time, one person was appointed as the Election Supervisor, Tax Collector, and the Chief Law Enforcement Officer. Now the sheriff is a constitutional officer who is elected by the voters to serve a four year term.[1]

Organization

The agency is currently headed by Sheriff Bobby G. Hammons. The DCSO currently has 14 sworn law enforcement personnel (including the sheriff), 4 courtroom security, 3 school resource officers, 2 dogs, and 2 secretarial staff.[2]

Fallen Officers

Since the establishment of the Dickenson County Police Department, 5 officers have died in the line of duty. [3]
