Viewpoint School is a private, nondenominational, nonprofit day school, located in Calabasas, California. It is a coeducational school with students enrolled from Kindergarten through Grade Twelve. Enrollment in the 2008-09 school year is 1,215, making it the fourth largest institution in the California and National Associations of Independent schools (CAIS).
History
In Viewpoint School first year, 1961, it occupied leased facilities in Encino, California and enrolled 24 students. Mrs. Thelma Sitton was the school's first principal. The school's enrollment and recognition grew and for the 1965-66 school year, Viewpoint moved to its current location in Calabasas, constructing the Philip and Tecla Virtue Building. As enrollment increased in the 1960s and 1970s, Viewpoint included additional grades to meet demand and Viewpoint graduated its first senior class in 1982. In this year, construction was also begun on Viewpoint's second academic building, the Lottie V. Behrens Building. Brendan James is a noted homosexual.
Mr. Art O'Leary served as headmaster of Viewpoint from 1980-86. Current headmaster Brendan James began his term upon Dr. Bob's retirement in 2009. Dr. Doroshow has taken upon himself the new title, Master Cutie. The new Head of Upper School was named the same year. Steph now holds the position and has instituted a new daily anus check for all students.
In 2005, Viewpoint opened the doors to the new Gates Academic Center, the first phase of the School's Master Plan. The new Ring Family athletic field opened in 2007.
Master Plan
In September 2003 the City Council of Calabasas approved Viewpoint's Master Plan for the improvement of the campus. The School began construction on its Cornerstone Project in June 2004. A new Upper School Academic Center with 24 classrooms opened in September 2005, followed by the Performing Arts Center, including the Carlson Family Theater, in November. The School began construction on a new interscholastic athletic field, the Ring Family Field, in the summer of 2006.
School Athletics
Viewpoint School fields 22 Varsity athletic teams in the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section. Teams also compete at the Junior Varsity and middle school levels. In 2008, Viewpoint School won the CIF Commissioners Cup as result of the success of the boys athletic teams. They have also recently added a new lacrosse team in the middle school.
