Old talk
There is an instrumental song called 択捉島 on the OST of the movie "Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence", should this be included "Iturup in popular culture"? It's never mentioned that they are on Iturup in the movie; the rundown "Special Economics Zone" is only refered to "be in the far north".
Expansion of objectivity
This is a currently very active territorial issue, where Russia on one hand claims to have rights to the island since they occupied it at the end of world war 2 and Japan claiming it to be part of their national territory.
Although wikipedia should not take sides I think it may appear one sided to only include the russian name for the island in the topic when the island and the other 3 disputed ones were actually named originally by Japan along time ago. I suggest the title or early description states the original japanese name of (択捉 Etorofu) or (択捉島 Etorofu island) before the russian occupation. The Russian name should still be listed first due to Russia currently controlling the island.
- Not 'controlling'. RF is the legal 'owner' of the island.--hnnvansier (talk) 14:00, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
