Tragedy
On Febuary 18, 1958, the first Tiger coach, Speedy Jones, was killed in a car crash. He is considered by many to be the greatest player in street football history. Jones was the single wing tailback and head coach of the team in 1956 and 1957. He was also the team's founder, starting the club on June 21, 1956.
Club's Founding
As mentioned above, the Tigers were founded on June 21, 1956 by Speedy Jones. They played thier first game on that same day, against arch-rival Island Home, winning 14-13. The team would go to a 10-0 record, all games against Island Home.
In 1957, the Tigers were as strong as ever, fighting for a 12-0 record and a National Championship. They played 9 games against Island Home, two against newly formed Murfeesboro, and one against Harlem, the founders of the game. This would be the final season for Speedy Jones, as he would be killed in a car crash 9 months later.
The years after
When Speedy Jones died, the Tigers looked for a head coach and a new owner. One young 19 year old Earl Johnson stepped up to give it a shot. Johnson played for the Tigers in 1956, thier inagural season. Johnson had great sucess in his first 3 seasons, winning the national title in each of those years. Johnson's three yards and a cloud of dust offense punished opponents to the core, and made him 40-0 in his first three years as head coach.
Formation of the County Leauge
In 1961, the new governing body of street football in Knox County, the Knox County Leauge was formed. The leauge was the first of it's kind on the planet for that sport. The Tigers dominated the first year in the leauge, going 13-0, with a 6-0 confrence mark, thus winning the County Title.
In 1962, the same occoured, the only difference being that they played one more game, but the leauge record was still the same, standing at 6-0.
1963 was yet again, another confrence and national title win.
The first loss
The date was June 26, 1964. The Tigers were facing Harlem, and the game was very back and fouth. As usual for an Earl Johnson-coached team, the Tigers had beaten the D-Line to a pulp, but the Black Bombers dug in there and stopped the Tigers on a 4th down play deep in South Haven territory. With :16 remaining, the Harlem team scored a touchdown to go up 22-20. South Haven could not respond, and Harlem got the victory, 22-20. This was the first loss in franchise history, coming 9 years after the team was founded, still a record that many say will never be broken. The Tigers amassed 7 national titles, and 3 county titles, before losing thier first game.
But the Tigers would bounce back and get the county title, and the national title, with a 13-1 record, and a 7-0 record in confrence.
1965: A stunner
The Tigers came into 1965 looking for thier 9th straight national championship, and thier 5th county championship. It started well, with wins vs Downtown(Knoxville), and Island Home, but things weren't going to be going so well by years end. The Tiger's first loss was to
