Sun cake is a famous snack food in Taiwan, originating from Taichung City. The typical fillings consist of condensed malt sugar, and they are usually sold in specialty gift boxes as a souvenir for visitors. Some famous suncake pastry shops always have long ques of people waiting to buy boxed suncakes.

The shape of suncakes are round, with no uniformed size. One of the characteristics of the cakes is their crunchy crusts. Most people would eat them with Chinese tea, some people have them with hot boiled water and make them dissolves as porriage-like dessert.

Origin of the suncake

The earliest suncake originaed from the Lin family in She-Ko area of Taichung County. The Lin family used condensed malt sugar as fillings to make cake pastries. Later on, a pastry maker, Wei Qing-hai moldified the cakes and made them the way they are now.

The cake was not called as suncake initially. It got its name because the owner of "[Sun Booth][1]", one of the most famous pastry shops that sells suncakes, named the cakes after the shop's name.

Because he didn't patent the name, and soon many other pastries used the name "suncake" on the same kind of cakes they are selling.
