Merrick Alpert is a Connecticut businessman and politician who is currently running against incumbent United States Senator Christopher Dodd for the Democratic nomination in 2010.

Early Life

Merrick Alpert was born in Hartford, Connecticut to Alma Alpert, a single mother. He attended the University of Connecticut and graduated with a degree in Political Science from Trinity College in Connecticut. Alpert then attended the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington D.C.[1]

Political and Other Careers

Alpert volunteered on then-Senator Al Gore's 1988 bid for the presidency. He then worked on the Bill Clinton's successful 1992 Presidential Campaign and subsequently worked within the administration until his enrollment in the United States Air Force in 1998. During his time in the Air Force, Alpert served in peacekeeping missions in Bosnia, earning the Joint Service Commendation Medal.[2] Upon his return to the United States in 1999, he began work for Gore's 2000 presidential bid.

Alpert founded the medical software company E-Ceptionist in 1999. Following the sale of his shares in the company, he has held the position of President at Turbine Generator Maintenance and Latitude 18.[3]

Alpert currently is opposing incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Christopher Dodd for the Democratic nomination in 2010. Dodd has received criticism for his handling of the AIG bailout and other controversies, and many experts have predicted he will face a very difficult bid for re-election.[4] Alpert has vowed not to accept contributions from corporate interests.[5]

Family Life

Alpert lives in Mystic, Connecticut with his wife, Alexandra. The couple has three children.
Alpert's first book, a memoir titled Morning Sun, will be released in October 2010.[6]
