A sculpture by David Gerstein in a Sculpture garden in Ramat Hasharon, Israel

David (Dudu) Gerstein (דוד (דודו) גרשטיין) b. Jerusalem, 1944) is an Israeli sculptor. He works in different metals and other materials. He's also a painter and an illustrator. His works are worldwide recognized.

A painter and a sculptor, an excellent draughtsman and a craftsman, the Israeli artist David Gerstein seeks to expand the limits of the two-dimensional paintings into three-dimensional sculptures. In his choice of subject matter he wishes to break down the existing barriers between the work of art and its audience, by creating enchanted and simple straight forward images, which render sometimes intimate, dream-like, naïve scenes and another times a cinematic, large scale, choreographed reality. His easily recognizable artistic syntax have developed gradually, reflecting a search for a unique voice, which ranges from local to the universal. His art maintains a conscious interplay between the hand-made "original", "unique" work of art and the reproduced work of art; between high art and low art. Gerstein creates universal colorful and layered images of still-life compositions, urban landscapes and human activity, witch always retain local and autobiographical elements. His versatile body of works consist of indoors wall-sculptures formed as multi-layered cutouts, outdoor works, sculptures, paintings, prints, drawings, and designed objects including jewelry, which can be found in Museums and galleries, indoor and outdoor public as well as artifacts and design shops in Israel and around the world.

Biography

Gerstein was born in Jerusalem in 1944.

Gerstein started his art studies in the mid-1960s, when he was twenty-one years old, at Bezalel School of Art in Jerusalem, which was then more graphics and craft inclined than pure plastic arts oriented. Finding it too confining and set apart from international scene, he decided to go out and "conquer" the world, making Paris his natural first stop, like other Israeli artists before him such as Lea Nikel, Yehiel Shemi and Igael Tumarkin. They all searched to break away from the narrow borders of the local scene, and found their way to Paris, the pre-war capital of art. Gerstein studied at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts where he labored on acquiring the very "profession" of painting, as he says, in its most classical and traditional sense. He took part, as a student, in the Parisian Student Revolution of 1968 (1968 student riots), working on the posters and the propaganda leaflets. Still, in spite of the political vibe and Post-War French Abstract art, he soon realized, after visiting exhibitions of American Artists such as those of Jackson Pollock and Barnett Newman, that the forefront of the art world had long ago shifted to New York City. There, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art and Minimalism had flourished and ruled the 1950s and 1960s, drastically changing the face of art, its raw materials and subject matter.

"Things That Come from the Heart"(2000)

Gerstein left Paris, making the "Big Apple" his new home. He immediately enrolled to the Art Students' League, but more importantly, he was there, in the midst of art and culture scene. The artistic happenings that were taken place in galleries, museums, and on the street, day and night, fully captured his attention. He absorbed the overwhelming vibrating artistic buzz, which much later would turn up in his own works. The art scene was ruled by artists like Jasper Johns who took abstract representative graphic signs such as numbers, letters, or symbols and turned them into pictorial compositions, revealing their painterly nature as images, while denying their symbolism and subjective identification. Dennis Oppenheim, the Conceptualist sculptor, took his large-scale sculptures out of the galleries into open spaces. Claes Oldenburg, like other Pop artists, rehabilitated the object by taking the most mundane, commercial products, radically changing their scale, and endorsing them with artistic and critical qualities. Towards the end the 1960s Conceptual Art ruled the American art scene, led by artist like Sol LeWitt and Yves Klein who insisted that the idea was the most important aspect of the work of art, more than the means of achieving it and more that the final artifact itself. These ideas did not appeal to Gerstein, who wished to create an object. He wanted to produce art in the traditional sense-art which has a physical presence in the world and which might start as the most abstract idea, but must materialize finally as a concrete being: "Since I was a child I wanted to make an object, something tangible to which people can relate, and use painting as a space for depicting objects". Remaining in the realm of concept has never meant art, for me personally." However, minimalist and abstract elements did influence and infiltrate his art, setting it free from form in its formalistic sense, and at the same time paving the way back to the figurative handling of abstract notions such as music and rhythm. In the environmentally oriented sculpture "Things That Come from the Heart"(2000), figurative elements like the birds and the cactus are born out of minimalist cut-outs of human figures in basic light colors standing in a row, repeating and echoing each anther.

In the early 1970s Gerstein returned to Israel, where the winds of Minimalism and Conceptualism had only started to blow. The Pop revolution in its full American or European sense was almost unfelt (apart from a few important examples as the work of Henry Shelesnyak, Raffie Lavie, Yair Garbouz and Zvi Tolkovsky). Gerstein: "When I returned from New York I was still very young. I immediately began teaching at Bezalel and I had to make a crucial decision for myself as an artist: should I turn to what is popular and accepted, meaning the minimalist, conceptual approaches, or go my own way and be less popular, for the moment at least.” Gerstein chose the second option and followed the circle of the painter Avrham Ofek, supporting a lyric realist style that was concerned with the local scenery and the local atmosphere. His palette was monochromatic. His paintings were occupied by theatrical almost dramatic intimate taking place inside urban apartments and viewed from their balconies. The light, the shade, the architectural style all played a part in those early, semi-realistic paintings. He also took as his subject matter, scenes from his childhood in the city and in places like the Dead Sea, where he explored, along with biographical themes, formal aesthetic notions as light and color. This preoccupation would take a central place in his later mature work.
