Alexandra Socha is an American actress who took over the leading role of Wendla in the rock musical Spring Awakening in May 2008. She next appeared in the first Broadway revival of the Neil Simon play Brighton Beach Memoirs, as Nora.
Life and career
Socha was born on April 10, 1990, in Nashua, New Hampshire, where she grew up. She attended Nashua High South. Socha began to act as a child, joining the Peacock Players of Nashua,[1] where she played Amneris in the musical Aida in 2006.[2] She gained professional experience with the American Stage Festival and The Lyric Stage.[3]
Socha joined the ensemble of Spring Awakening, her first Broadway show, on July 24, 2007 as an ensemble member and understudy of Wendla, Thea, Anna and Martha.[2] After the original Wendla, Lea Michele, left the show, Socha was given the role beginning on May 20, 2008.[4][5][6] The Daily News gave a favorable review of her performance, describing her as "a revelation. She's a terrific actress with dewy looks and a marvelous voice that always draws you in."[7] The New York Times wrote, "Socha... looks so girlish and delicate that her plight sets you squirming in your seat."[8] She remained in the role until the show's closing on January 18, 2009, and shortly afterward was cast in the role of Nora in a Broadway revival of the Neil Simon comedy Brighton Beach Memoirs[9], which opened at the Nederlander Theater on October 25, 2009.[10]
