Pispala

Pispala is a city district 2,5km from the centre of Tampere, Finland. It located on the northern slope of Pispalanharju, which is the highest Moraineridge in Finland.

Pispala is widely considered as the most beautiful district of Tampere and Tourists are often guided there for the view and the sites unique urban design features. A monument for Finnish poet Lauri Viita is located near the highest point of the ridge.

Pispala houses the oldes still active public sauna in Finland. Rajaportin sauna began its operation 1906 and is currently owned by the City of Tampere. It is however run by a local Pispala Sauna Association (Finnish: Pispalan saunayhdistys ry.)[1] A famous landmark of the area is the Pispala Haulmtower (Finnish: Pispalan haulitorni.).

History

Pispala is named after the House of Pispa, which had the obligation to house the bishops during their travel. Farmyards where located in the area until as recently as 1869. As Tampere was industrialised Pispala grew with out a unified city plan which resulted to unique building styles and solutions. Specifically factory- and construction workers recited there. Most of them where originally from Tampere or the near areas such as ostrobothnia. The area was joined to the City of Tampere 1937.

Many well-known Finnish artist and celebrities have lived and live in Pispala some of these include Lauri Viita, Olavi Virta, Mikko Alatalo, Hannu Salama, Seela Sella, Keith Armstrong, Aaro Hellaakoski. More recently it is featured as a main place of events in the The Butterfly from Ural (Finnish: Uralin perhonen) animated short film directed by Katariina Lillqvist in 2008.
