The straight pride campaign is a complement to gay pride, in that it accommodates the opinions of heterosexual people.

Categories

Straight Pride can be broken into three different groups. There are those who are not homophobic at all, those who believe that anything other than heterosexuality is wrong and those who, while they might not admit that they are homophobic, say or do things that can be perceived as homophobic.

Those who are not homophobic

Many of those who fall into this category have at some time felt repressed about their heterosexuality. Perhaps people constantly assume they are gay because of how they act or look, maybe at one time they thought they were gay or maybe they just have a lot of gay friends and feel left out of gay pride events.

Straightprideusa.com is a website selling straight pride apparel. That appears to fall into this category.

The Straight Pride Livejournal Community is run by a gay woman. It is for straight people and allies of straight people. Homophobia is not tolerated.

Those who are homophobic

Those who are homophobic believe that heterosexuality is superior to homosexuality. Often their straight pride is more an attempt to anger homosexuals than to be proud of who they are

The student said he "doesn't believe God approves of their lifestyle". A federal court ruled the school's ban on the shirt unconstitutional and said it violated free speech to ban it.

In between

In this group they do not necessarily actively hate homosexuals, but they believe that heterosexuality is better than homosexuality.

Straightpridewear.com sells an assortment of straight pride clothing. Their website states that they are not homophobic. However, they do not support gay marriage and do not believe that gay families can properly raise children. This can commonly be perceived as homophobic.

Discrimination

Elliott Chambers & his parents have field a lawsuit against Woodbury High School when the pricipal hypocritically told him that he couldn't where his straight pride T-shirt inspite of the fact that the Gays were allowed to where "gay pride" shirts, and patches. The American Family Association decided to represent him. [1]
