Shankaboot is an interactive web-based video series filmed in and around Beirut, Lebanon. It is the world's first Arabic Web Drama Series.[1] [2]
Series Overview
Shankaboot - The webseries takes us into the beating heart of modern Beirut street life through the eyes of Suleiman, our 15 year old, happy-go-lucky delivery boy. Along for the ride are 19 year old Ruwaida and the mysterious 20 year old Chadi, along with a host of other memorable characters. One of the aims of the series is to present Beirut life in the most realistic style so the show's creators cast actors with either little to no prior acting experience or a naturalistic acting style rarely seen on Arabic Television.
Additional elements in Shankaboot
Alongside the drama series there are other elements within Shankaboot worth noting. The website is also the home of Waheed El-Booz, Shankaboot’s comedy electrician who causes madness and chaos wherever he goes. Episodes of Waheed El-Booz are released alongside new episodes of Shankaboot and are a broad comic counterpoint to the main series. All new episodes of Shankaboot are also accompanied by their own Point and Click game allowing fans to interact with the characters. As the series progresses more elements will be added to the Shankaboot Universe.
Production
The Production of the first part of Shankaboot took place in Beirut in December 2009, largely in the area of Burj-Hammoud, a densely populated town on the Eastern borders of Beirut. The production team is currently filming the second part of Shankaboot in Beirut and the Bekaa Valley. Shankaboot is produced by Batoota Films in Association the BBC World Service Trust with the support of Zico House and The Welded Tandem Picture Company.
