Ordinary English usage

In ordinary English usage, damage is physical harm to something. Damages is not the simple plural of damage; an event causing damage to many things is said to cause much damage, not many damages; and it may cause damage, not damages, to a certain monetary value. Damages is a sum of money awarded by a court of law.
