Harardhere is a town in the Mudug province of central Somalia, also spelled Harardheere and Xarardhere. It has become notorious in recent times as a base for piracy in Somalia.[1] A pirate cooperative exchange opened here in 2009 to finance pirate activities.[2]
In May of 2010, members of Hizbul Islam entered the city, causing many pirates to flee.[3]
Mohamed Said Iyow, the first member of parliament to be elected, hailed from the Sarur clan, based in Harardhere. He was a leading figure in securing independence for Somalia, and was a key member of the Somali Youth League (SYL). Abdirashid Ali Shermarke, the nation's second president (1967-1969) and former prime minister (1960-1964), as well as General Mohamed Abshir Muuse, a former police commander, also hailed from Harardhere.
