Adil Khan, (born Feburary 3, 1983 in Oslo, Norway), is a Pakistani-Norwegian dancer and actor of Punjabi/Pashtoon descent. who came to the limelight when he won Dansefeber[1] (the Norwegian version of " So You Think You Can Dance " ) on TVNorge in 2006.
Biography
Birth and ancestry
Adil Khan was born Adil Thathaal at Ullevål sykehus hospital in Oslo, Norway. Adil lived at Munkelia, later the family moved to Grønland in Sentrum,and then to Ullevål Stadion. Adil's father hailed from the Punjab province in Pakistan while his mother is a Pashtun who have her roots in Afghanistan/ Iran. She belongs to the Durrani tribe which is scattered through Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran. Adil's father has an extended family living in Norway while his mother has no family in the country. He is the younger brother of singer, composer and human rights activist Deeyah.
Dance passion
Adil is basically a breakdancer and had won dance competitions in Norway and abroad like "Bboy Rumble 1999" (Norwegian championship) "Scandinavian Battle Of The Year 2001" (Scandinavian championship) and "Time 2 Battle" i Malmø (Scandinavian Championship). After winning Dansefeber, Adil has lived in Los Angeles to improve his dancing skills where he has been a member of Quest Crew who were declared winners of the third season of America's Best Dance Crew. Adil has also lived in copenhagen where he was the member of elite breakdance groupn "Natural Effects", Adil began to dance in 1999 and together with his friends founded dance group "Floor Knights".
Actor
After his victory in Dansefeber, Adil has moved in acting world and has been performing on the main theatre stages in Norway. Adil has played at Oslo Nye Teater as Bernardo in West Side Story 2006, as Nutcracker in The Nutcracker 2007,and Moritz in Spring Awakening 2010; at Riksteatret as Amo in @lice 2008; (@LICE was later transmitted at the state channel NRK): and at Det Norske Teatret played Mowgli in The Jungle Book
In 2009 Adil was nominated for the Hedda Award in the best male role category for his performance in the Jungle book. Adil is the youngest actor ever to be nominated for this prestigious theatre award.[2]
Honours
Adil Khan has been the very first official ambassador for FRI,[3] an anti smoking and anti drug campaign initiated by Norwegian Ministry of Health and Social welfare. On 31 May 2006 adil was awarded with an award by " The Cancer foundation" for " showing the youth good attitude by saying NO to tobacco and drugs. Dance is the way he expresses himself, and he dares to stick to his views and goes on his own ways".[4] This award brought him in the same line as Gro Harlem Bruntland (former Norwegian prime minister).
In 2008 Adil received Oslo City's Artist Award at Oslo City Hall by Oslo Municipality for his contributions in Oslo's cultural life.[5]
