Crystal Lynn Bowersox (born August 4, 1985) is an American singer-songwriter from Elliston, Ohio who is currently a finalist on the ninth season of American Idol.
Early life
Bowersox was born in Elliston, Ohio.[1] She is a single mother of one son. She also has a fraternal twin brother. Crystal attended Oak Harbor High School in Oak Harbor, Ohio, where she was on the swim team.[citation needed] She later attended the Toledo School for the Arts in Toledo, Ohio.[1]
During her days as a struggling musician, she played as a busker at several train stations, particularly when she lived in Chicago. She also played extensively in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood. Before Idol, Crystal performed gospel music at her church.
American Idol
Bowersox auditioned for American Idol in Chicago, Illinois. She sang "Piece of My Heart." Shania Twain commented that she had "raw natural talent" and Simon Cowell continues to compliment her voice every week.
On March 2, Bowersox was hospitalized because of an unconfirmed illness, forcing a last minute switch in scheduling to give her extra time to recuperate.[2][3] The men competed that day instead of the women. She sang the next day and impressed all of the judges.[4]
The following week, her strong performance prompted Simon Cowell to state, "Right now, you are the one everyone has to beat."[5]
After Siobhan Magnus's departure from American Idol in the top 6, Bowersox is the only female contestant remaining in the Top 3.
Performances
- ^Note 1 Due to the judges using their one save to save Michael Lynche, the Top 9 remained intact for another week.
- ^Note 2 Though Crystal Bowersox was the last contestant announced to be 'safe' and moving on to the Top 3, Ryan Seacrest stressed on the Top 4 Results Night that the 'safe' contestants would be announced "in no particular order."[6] Thus, the audience has no way of knowing which of the Top 3 was the second-lowest vote-getter that night after Michael Lynche, who was eliminated.
