UXUS (you times us) was founded in 2003 as an international multidisciplinary creative company with offices in Amsterdam and California. UXUS’ design methodology is Brand Poetry.

About

UXUS’ was founded by former Creative Director Apparel at Nike Inc. George Gottl and Oliver Michell, a former designer at the Office for Metropolitan Architecture. Together with Erika Gottl, founder of Merus Wines who is now partner and General Manager, they set up the office in 2003. UXUS' design philosophy is to fuse art with design. The idea of brand poetry, "or artistic solutions for commercial needs"[1] is apparent in their work and they are strongly influenced by the notion that a sterile focus on function is not enough. Thus each project inherently provides a connection, or an Emotional Design.

An example of such design is the Merus Winery. Completed in 2009, the design rejected the conventional aesthetic norms of the rustic winery; instead creating a décor that is a fusion of refined heritage and modern sophistication that "created a unique experience where the customer would value the excellence and the complexity of the Merus brand."[2]

Amsterdam Loft

UXUS designed a private residence located in an 18th century sugar factory on one of Amsterdam’s famous canals. The open plan "renovation and redesign has been creative, idiosyncratic and eclectic yet on the other hand it creates an ironic, poetic and romantic living area for the occupants of this loft."[1]

H&M Home

UXUS collaborated with H&M to design two installations to launch the H&M Home range in store. "The approach was to create a “gallery” of fun, fashion home products, which customers are encouraged to touch and explore. H&M Home is a gallery/showroom using emotional product presentations, which verge on art, to encourage customers to engage with the brand."[2]

UXUS Office

For their own office, "UXUS have created a space which transports their staff and visitors into a wonderland of creative design based on the ‘mysterious and poetic atmosphere of old and new world fables’".[3] The office in Amsterdam's Jordaan district is unique for it's location in one of the cities few Art-Nouveau/Neo-Gothic buildings.

Projects in Development

UXUS projects in development including retail stores for the Stedelijk Museum and the Rijksmuseum in the Netherlands. More recently they have been appointed by Tate Modern to design retails shops for the Herzog & de Meuron designed Tate Modern in London.
