Linda Fox-Mellway is a municipal politician from Alberta, Canada. She is a current Alderman sitting on Calgary City Council and has been serving in that position since 1995.

Political career

Early career

Fox-Mellway ran for a seat to Calgary City Council in the 1995 Calgary municipal election.

Fifth term

The 2007 Calgary municipal election saw her returned to her fifth term in office by acclamation.[1]

Fox-Mellway voted to support a property tax hike in 2008 that saw the property tax rate in Calgary increase 5.3%.[2]

In early 2009 Fox-Mellway was cited as one of the worst performing Alderman on City Council, she was one of two Alderman given an "F" Grade, the worst possible on an assessment conducted by the Coalition for Property Tax Fairness. The only Alderman to score lower on the assessment was Druh Farrell.[3] Later that year city Alderman were audited with regard to personal expenses. Among Fox-Mellway's abuse of expenses was billing tax payers almost $350.00 to send her kids to a Metallica concert.[4] Fox-Mellway defended her actions by claiming she used the wrong credit card.[4] In addition to her personal expense abuses, she spent almost $6000 of tax payer money giving out gifts in 2010, most of that being spent on Bernard Callebaut chocolates.[5]

A scandal erupted in May 2010 when it came to light that Fox-Mellway was working behind the scenes with the Seton Community Association to place a $70 million dollar recreation facility in that community, instead of working with the South East Calgary Recreation Society that was created and given a mandate by city council to gather public input in the matter.[6]

Fox-Mellway has been actively discouraging use of pesticides.[7] She voted for a pesticide ban when it came up in city council. She is also against continuing operations at Race City Speedway, as she voted against extending the lease of the popular race-car track.[8]

Fox-Mellway is running for her sixth term in the 2010 Calgary municipal election.
