Douglas Michael "Dougy" Worthington (born 21 August 1987) is an Australian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist best known as the lead singer and guitarist of The Temper Trap.
Life & career
Worthington was born in Rockingham, Western Australia to English parents and raised in Warnbro. He is the younger brother of actor Sam Worthington and sister Lucinda Ruth. Worthington graduated from Living Waters Lutheran College before moving to Melbourne at the age of 17 to attend University.
While at the University of Melbourne, Worthington met guitarist Joseph Greer. Together they formed The Temper Trap in 2005, and soon expanded the band to a 5-piece. The next year, they released their debut EP, The Temper Trap EP. The band finished recording their debut album, Conditions, with veteran music producer Jim Abbiss in March of 2009 in London, after 4 weeks recording the bulk of the album in Melbourne in late 2008. Worthington said his key influences when recording Conditions included Radiohead, Prince, Massive Attack and U2. The album was released in Australia on 19 June 2009, and debuted at #9 on the Australian ARIA Charts. It was released in the UK on 10 August, 2009. It received favourable reviews and commercial success. The band has won and been nominated for numerous including 4 ARIA noms.
Along with his work with The Temper Trap, Worthington has established himself as a successful songwriter. He has worked with Sia, Florence and the Machine, Little Boots, Ladyhawke, Kesha Marina and the Diamonds, and most notably Kate Nash and Lily Allen. He was the co-writer and sole producer of Allen's second album It's Not Me, It's You and the co-writer of Nash's debut album, Made of Bricks. When asked how he got his start in writing, Worthington says:
“ | I met Kate [Nash] when I was in London with my band playing some shows in 2006. It was the first time we left Australia and I started talking to her about music and one thing led to another. By the time I got back to Australia, we communicated via internet, other technology, and sometimes I would fly up there and started writing together. We worked on the music together and then she worked on the lyrics basically. I guess people liked it, cause I started getting calls from people that wanted to work with me. It's been kind of crazy. | ” |
However, due to a fallout with Nash he did not appear or work with her on her second album.
Personal life
Worthington is close friends with actress Emily Browning, whom he met while living in Melbourne, and actors Ed Westwick and Rafi Gavron. After living in London briefly in 2009, he moved permanently to Los Angeles. He began dating Amber Heard in early 2009. In April 2009, rumors spread about a supposed engagement but were immediately contradicted by Heard's representative at Hyler Management, to protect their privacy.
