Sally Fitzgibbons

Sally Fitzgibbons is an Australian professional surfer on the Women's ASP World Tour (2009, 2010). Sally was born in Gerroa, NSW Australia, in December 1990, the youngest of 4 children with 3 older brothers.

Sally played a wide variety of sports growing up and gained recognition quickly at the elite level progressing to various academies including the Illawarra Academy of Sport (Athlete of the Year), NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) and the High Performance Centre at Casuarina (Surfing Australia HQ) for Surfing.

Sally started surfing at the age of 7 with her brothers and it wasn’t until she was 11 that she looked for competition, winning her first competition the following year, the Icon All-Girls U14's, Lennox Head. Sally represented her State and Australia on 14 occasions in a number of different sports, including Athletics (winning Gold at the Youth Olympics 800m and 1500m in 2007), Touch Football, Soccer, Surfing and Cross Country running while attending Kiama High School.

As a surfer Sally had her first significant results at the age of 14 becoming the youngest surfer male or female to win an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Pro Junior (Under 21’s) event and also finishing second at the World Qualifying Series (WQS) Billabong Festival the same day. She continued to set records throughout her junior years winning the Australasian Pro Junior Series in 2007 and 2008. Sally represented Australia at the International Surfing Association (ISA) U18 World Surfing Titles in Brazil placing second age 15; at 16 she traveled to Portugal for the ISA U18 World Titles to win her first World Title and backed it up the following year winning both the Billabong ASP U21 World Title and the ISA World Games Open Title.

In her first attempt to reach the Women’s elite World Tour via the World Qualifying Series Sally set a record by wrapping up the 2008 series in the first 5 events to become the youngest and quickest, male or female, World Tour qualifier in ASP history.

2009 saw Sally finish 5th on the World Tour in her rookie year, with a win at the Portugal WQS event along the way.

Fitzgibbons is currently on the Women's 2010 ASP World Tour. She has been runner-up at three of the five events in 2010 and currently sits second on the World Tour rankings.
