Possible unfree image on Commons

G'day Bidgee, if you get a chance have a look at this image, which appears to me to be the one used by many of the media stories about the Sydney Piper Mojave crash the other day, but is tagged as an original work. I don't have anything to do with Commons, is there some review process over there? YSSYguy (talk) 05:54, 21 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've just deleted it, the fact is it was a screen-shot of footage taken by Channel Seven (I used the ABC story as the example but I think they used The Mercury's screen-shot of the footage). With requesting a deletion of a copyright vio just use {{copyvio|source=URL here}} or {{copyvio|1=Reason here}} but for suspect images just take it to Commons:Deletion requests (Use {{Delete|reason=Your reason here}} on the image pages) however you have to do it on the Wikimedia Commons image pages and not Wikipedia's. Re: 43 most populous cities of Australia

Sorry, I am awful with explaining when I edit as I often forget what I did, so I am incredibly sorry with the replacement of categories without stating it. However, don't we also have state-wide templates for the cities in each state. I also created the aforementioned {{Cities of Australia}} page before but it didn't appear on every relevant page and it would still be hard to define a city with so many "towns" being larger than cities (compared Port Macquarie with Ararat) Andyman14 (talk) 08:39, 22 June 2010 (UTC).[reply]

Hello can you help me with embedding videos like MGM UA Home Video Low Tone.Thanks.--Brandondorf9999 (talk) 16:44, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You can't embed or link to copyrighted videos into articles. Bidgee (talk) 05:33, 26 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sure you can.--Brandondorf9999 (talk) 22:36, 26 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Photos

Great work on getting out there and taking photos of politicians - wouldn't it be great if the Parliamentary Library just released their photos into public domain? As a minor side-issue, why is this a better photo than this? The first one looks nothing like her! (And get well soon!) Frickeg (talk) 08:49, 26 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No problem :) If I wasn't ill I would have done an emergency trip to Canberra to try and get photos on Thursday, hoping to get over it though. Agree, would be great Parliamentary Library would give us free use even if they released the photos under a Creative Commons ShareAlike 2.5 (AU).
I have met with the APH Parliamentary Library for Wikimedia Australia to discuss exactly that and they're keen to do it but there's a couple of sticking points that seem to be deal breakers, at least for the time being (the main one is alteration of the files). But they're talking about it, at least, which is very positive, I think. The flip side is they told me the MPs have the right to release their own images if they wish to, and a number of them have already, so the way around the APH Library is an organised effort to contact all the MPs directly, asking them to release free images. Regarding the Kay Hull photos, well the Australia Day photo is over a year old, only has a dpi of 72 but the Reserve Forces Day photo is recent and has a dpi of 240 as I'm now photographing in RAW again. Bidgee (talk) 09:40, 26 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Civility and Complaints

Bidgee, I've left a comment and something of an answer to the discussion you were involved with on Jimbo's Talk page. I've tried to answer some of the statments made by GregJackP there and I think you might be interested to read a response to his commentary, which has largely gone unchallenged, I believe because most of us are tired of going on and on about an article that has already been deleted. It is get over it time, but he doesn't seem to get it. He was all about concensus building when he had a crew behind him, but now that we have concensus to move on, he is posting on Jimbo's board or wherever else he might find someone to take his word at face value without looking into the situation further and hopefully then someone else gets blocked or banned due to his proclivity to file civility complaints against anyone not in agreement with him. Just as a courtesy would you mind, on an appropriate page rather than here so the edittor concerned can see, detailing what the "other issues" are so that they don't remain a mystery and a potential future bone of contention? Thank you. --Falcadore (talk) 03:22, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

yeah mate it's all good, i just though this newer update looked cleaner and easier to read, the whole medal box with gold, silver and bronze with WR in green and Aussie record in red was done by me in the first place in an older account, just figured if people liked my previous idea, they'd be open to this one —Preceding unsigned comment added by Aussieswimmer (talkcontribs) 01:43, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

TVS/Freeview (Australia)

Hi Bidgee

I emailled Freeview asking whether TVS is in fact part of Freeview. Their response is below. If the Freeview page continues to list TVS as a channel, it should be noted that TVS (and the other community channels which are or are about to be broadcast in digital) are not technically part of Freeview.

Response from Freeview:

[TVS is] not a shareholder in our consortium. Freeview is owned by ABC, SBS, Seven Network, Nine Network, TEN, Prime, WIN and Southern Cross.

In saying this, Freeview does promote TVS as part of the channels that are available on the digital platform, because our primary function is to convert Australians from analogue to digital TV and we do this by promoting the channels that are available in digital. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.158.50.65 (talk) 10:38, 5 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please discuss reasons for reverts

Hello fellow wikipedian, can you please post reasons for reverts on the Bundaberg talk page. Information was sourced and cited from Bundaberg City Council published non-fiction works? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.39.51.116 (talkcontribs) 05:54, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Clearly, there are some issues with referencing, for example [1]. This doesn't fine the citation criteria by a long stretch.
Also, there are some issues with capitalisation: "The Latter was jestingly adopted into the Aboriginal" and spelling "or caln ..."
I also wonder who has this opinion: "Some of the theories verge from plausible to outright fabrications"?
In places, the writing looks accurate and well sourced, but capitalisation, spelling, and referencing need to be correct. Perhaps, in order to avoid reverts, you could build your skill by completing edits that are more straight forward to begin with? Good luck. --wcrosbie, Melbourne, Australia 09:44, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

Fair enough, however in the spirit of what Wikipedia is and reminding more distinguished publishers that Wikipedia is open to all contributors and that their edits are not gospel. As well as considering to help better the article instead of simply reverting an edit that raises a different opinion to the one posted by the original author; particularly when the opinions given are cited from reliable sources and are usable according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Non-free_content#Text. I understand the need to create order from chaos but unfortunately this kind of attitude gives me a depressing feeling that even this project's (Wikipedia) information is controlled by those who feel they know what's best for the rest of us. How disappointing. 203.39.51.116 (talk) 01:03, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I can understand that your edits where done in good faith but Wikipedia is strict on the way content is written and sourced. I recommend that you sign-up for an account (you don't have to if you don't want to) and create a page on your userspace (something like I've done here) and use it to get use to and also learn the styles, use of templates, editing ect but it can also be used to edit and allow others to show where you went wrong ect so that you can edit articles in the future without having to worry about it being reverted. I'm also sorry that you feel depressed and disappointed about it, but I hope can stay and contribute to Wikipedia. Bidgee (talk) 01:33, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The kind gesture is appreciated Bidgee. 203.39.51.116 (talk) 04:48, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

ABC News 24

Good afternoon Bidgee.. Do you think it would be worth putting protection on ABC News 24, the amount of times we've had to revert it in the last 3 or so days? I'm interested to hear your opinion on whether or not it should be. Wally Otto (talk) 06:43, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think page protection will serve its purpose as it would have to be full protection (even established editors have added unsourced content). Bidgee (talk) 07:16, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't there an edit protect, like the one you did when 3MP was closing down? Could that work? Wally Otto (talk) 11:19, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It would only stop IP's and unconfirmed accounts from editing and not established accounts (Example). Bidgee (talk) 11:28, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Point taken then. Isn't it a shame that pending changes 2 isn't in proper existance. Thanks for clarifying anyway though, I was a little confused. Wally Otto (talk) 11:35, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
