Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao (Telugu: కల్వకుంట్ల చంద్రశేఖర రావు) (born 17 February 1954) abbreviated KCR, is a member of the 15th Lok Sabha of India. He is a Member of Parliament from the Mahaboobnagar constituency of Andhra Pradesh and is the president of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi. He was the cabinet minister for Labour and Employment.

Early life

Rao was born in Chintamadaka village near Siddipet in Medak district. He did his Masters in Telugu Literature. In his youth he worked for telangana. He is one of the best speakers in the contemporary indian politics,he can speak telugu, hindi, urdu and english fluently.

KCR and Fast Unto Death

In 2009 December, 11 days of KCR’s fast triggered students agitation and forced Central Government to consult all major parties who consented to the formation of Telangana state and Chidambaram announced initiation of the process of formation of Telangana. The rest is contemporary (current) history.

KCR’s thinking, methodology and strategy behind these events are:

  • With initial successes of TRS, it can persuade and tempt the leaders of other parties that promising Telangana is likely to provide them with access to a valuable vote bank, which will significantly increase these parties’ chances of electoral victory. KCR successfully implemented it.
  • His plan was to get sufficient seats to hold the balance of power at the state and/or center level that would allow the party to bargain with the potentially ruling coalitions for a commitment to Telangana statehood. He could succeed in this significantly.

He can become chief minister of the new state and increase his wealth.

  • KCR thought that success of TRS empowered supporters of Telangana statehood within other parties will force their leaders to support separation, which we have witnessed.
  • KCR calculated that Success of TRS threatens to lure away separatist supporters and leaders from other parties, forcing those parties to support separation to avoid their departure. As we know this did happen.
  • KCR knew that ,by fasting he can unify virtually all people in Telangana and it will trigger agitation and raised the intensity of demand for separation to such a level that peace and tranquility is threatened, forcing the government to concede separation.

Score card of KCR

  • He has made Congress, BJP and TDP commit to Telangana state formation on record.
  • He built a political platform at Delhi with Agnivesh, Ajith singh, Burdan and many more leaders.
  • He used all his prestige, political power and energy on a single point program of separate Telangana.
  • He sustained the campaign for 10 long years. No one in Indian history has done that except Jharkhand Mukti Morcha.
  • He has initiated the resurgence of Telangana culture and restored dignity to its language.
  • He is an excellent public speaker and has the strategic skills to, modulate, intensify, and rouse people power of Telangana.
  • He is audacious, and can up-the-ante strategically, can use brinkmanship as a weapon and has strategic fore sight and depth.
  • He never lets any one figure out what he is (simply put, once you become predictable you become vulnerable).
  • He has shown unwavering belief in adverse circumstances. He understands what he is doing and is single minded and single pointed.
  • He is the best speaker in andhra pradesh politics, he has great influential power with his strong and powerful speech. He is equally strong in telugu, english, hindi, urdu.
  • Finally, he is one of the top leaders with great chesrishma in telangana

Criticism Against KCR

The criticism of YSR in the Assembly is that had Chandrababu Naidu given him the minister ship he would not have started Telangana agitation. He was obviously humiliated. It is a life changing experience. Everyone has life changing experience which will give them new meaning to life. But YSR’s utterances are like an observation ‘Had Gandhi been allowed to travel in the white mans compartment he would not have started freedom movement’. It is like telling, had Baroda Maharaja staff not given him a separate water pot, Ambedkar would not have fought for Daliths. The intention is not to put KCR in Gandhi and Ambedkar’s league, but to highlight how the mental processes take shape.
