Alan Davey (born 11 September 1963, in Ipswich, Suffolk) was the bass player in Hawkwind, Bedouin, Meads of Asphodel having studied carpentry at the local civic college and is now the bass player/vocalist for Gunslinger. His latest bands are Pre-Med, Hawklords and Thunor. He is best known as the second longest serving member of Hawkwind, joining in 1984 and leaving in June 2007, having previously taken a break from the band between 1996 and 2000.
Davey formed his first band, Gunslinger, in 1979 with his cousin Nigel Potter. Influenced by Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Motorhead and Hawkwind, amongst others, they quickly gained a reputation for playing deafeningly loud and built a solid following. They recorded a demo tape and a record deal was promised, but unfortunately the deal was never signed. Gunslinger played venues such as Woodbridge Cinema to great local acclaim
A long-time fan of Hawkwind, Davey had sent a tape of his playing to Dave Brock, and in 1984 Brock invited him to join the band, moving Harvey Bainbridge from bass to keyboards in order to accommodate him. During this first tenure with Hawkwind they released seven studio albums and four live offerings. However by 1996 Davey was unhappy with the musical direction of the band and left to form his own Middle-Eastern flavoured hard-rock group Bedouin and a Motörhead tribute act named Ace of Spades.
In October 2000 Davey was reunited with Hawkwind for the Hawkestra 30th anniversary event at the Brixton Academy, and in 2001 he rejoined Hawkwind. They released three live and two studio albums before Davey left the band again in June 2007 to perform and record with the re-formed Gunslinger and Meads of Asphodel.
In May 2001 Alan Davey became a Muslim by converting to Islam and stated a preference for being addressed as Ali rather than Alan. [[1]]
In March 2007 he released the very well-received solo album "Human on the Outside".
He is working on a variety of projects, including a new solo album called "Eclectic Devils" with former Hawkwind/David Bowie violinist/keyboardist Simon House, which has now been completed and also features contributions from Nigel Potter,James Hodkinson, Louis Davey and Isobel from Bruise. Artwork for this project will be supplied by Alan's regular artist Kevin M Sommers. He is also working on an album of Arabic-flavoured material with former Hawkwind vocalist Bridget Wishart. Davey has joined Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist Karl E. H. Seigfried to form Thunor, a group focusing on a mixture of British psychedelia and Chicago-style jazz and metal.
March 2008 saw the release of the début album by Gunslinger entitled "Earthquake in E Minor". The album features some of the material that Davey and Potter had written between 1979 and 1982 during the band's first inception.
On May 18th 2009 Alan Davey released the new solo album entitled "Eclectic Devils" on his own label Earthquake Records.
